Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more
Rtx/Cis: Sorry about your dad. It's a terrible disease. Currently cis platinum based chemotherapy protocols and radiotherapy protocols are used. Rare cures reported. Mostly palliative. Remission is not cure, its like a truce between the tumor and the patient. Usually fast growing. Not a surgically treated disease in that stage.Surgery only for small nodulesdx. As small cell in bx. What can we expect from a stage 4 lung cancer patient with bone metastases- what can be done in case all treatments are ruled out?
Biomarkers in lungCA: For stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer -- specifically adenocarincoma -- i would check the biomarkers alk and egfr. The response rate with oral drugs for those targets is ~80% vs. 20% with chemo. Bone mets can be treated with bisphosphonate (zometa) or Denosumab (xgeva). Palliative care provided early has a survival benefit. Ref: temel et al. Nejm http://www.Nejm.Org/doi/pdf/10.1056/nejmoa1000678. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
In general, not good: Non small cell is usually not as aggressive as small cell, but chemotherapy is not as effective. A lot depends on the functional status of your dad, and where the cancer has spread. Stage 4 implies it has spread somewhere. 5 year survival rates are usually less than 5%. Sorry. ...Read more
My friend diagnosed stage 4 inoperablel lung cancer.6 rounds of chemo shrunk tumor but tumors in adrenals grew. She was diagnosed in march.Prognosis?
Cosider localtherapy: I think the lung cancer can metastasize to the adrenal gland either by the lymphatic or the hematogenous route. In case of metastasis by the lymphatic route, it can be a solitary metastasis, and the prognosis can be relatively better. If the patient is young and in good performance status, aggressive treatment(stereotactic radiotherapy or even removal) can be considered in very selected case. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My friend was diagnosed in march with stage 4 inoperable lung cancer.6 tounds of aggressive chemo shrunk lung tumor but now in both adrenals.Prognosis?
Hard to say: Lung cancer often spreads to the adrenal glands, but adrenal tumors are often benign. The best predictor of how well your friend will do is how quickly the tumor is growing. If he truly had nothing there in march and now, despite chemotherapy, has large adrenal tumors growing that is not a good sign. If, however, your frined has had adrenal tumors all along, then the prognosis is much better. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Stage IV lung CA: We really have no treatment that will get rid of lung ca that has spread beyond the lung..Stage iv. Treatment can sometimes slow things down but often doesn't even do that. Ca that has become visible on x-rays after only 3 months is very fast growing...You should spend as much time with your friend as you can, now. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs from the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more
