Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more
My mom is 50 years a old and has been recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. What is life expectancy?
Can't be certain: There are many variables that affect survival. The lung cancer type and location. Younger people tend to live longer than older people with lung cancer. Women with lung cancer have a greater life expectancy than men with with lung cancer. Every case is different. That being said, the median stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer life expectancy is about 8 months. Five year survival is only 1%. ...Read more

It is very difficult to make a prognostication about "life expectancy." stage 4 cancer, of whatever type, can be very difficult. It is important you get all the information you need that is accurate and helpful. ...Read more

My mom has stage 4 small cell lung cancer in both lungs, in severe pain no biopsy no trtreatment what happens now? Life expectancy?
Functional status: First, I am so sorry for you and your family. Lung cancer can spread very quickly. You mentioned hospice had been called. In general, that is an option when an individual has a life expectancy of less than 6months. But remember, that is just a prognosis (guess/estimate) not a hard set fact. The most important factors are her function, such as her ability to stand, walk, eat, etc. ...Read more

Stage 4 lung cancer no chemo tumor grew & cancer spread, clinical trial only now, on oxygen for sob, blood clots in legs, what is life expectancy?
Hard to say/depends.: At this stage of lung cancer, the options are limited as is survival. If treatment is done, it's usually chemotherapy and radiation and/or surgery after adjuvant chemotherapy. There are certainly trials out there and I would recommend talking to your doctor before starting any, but the chance for success is likely limited, as the 5 year survival of stage IV is <5%, but it doesn't hurt to try. ...Read more

Should I be concerned if my husband has stage four non-small cell lung cancer do you know any alternative treatments?
Be concerned: Stage 4 lung cancer has an overall poor prognosis. The therapy associated with any positive effects would be chemotherapy and/or radiation. While a cure can occur, it is a rare event with stage 4. Alternative therapies can be explored, but realize that most don't claim to cure. If you look at the advertizements closely, they will treat but never claim to cure. Standard therapy- 15% overall cure. ...Read more
My husband is terminally ill from stage IV lung cancer that has mestastised to his liver. Taking navelbine (vinorelbine). Will that cure him?
No, but...: It has a fair chance of slowing the tumor. Some folks live for months or perhaps even longer comfortably even with liver metastases from lung cancer, especially if the response to chemotherapy has been good. I hope the two of you will have more quality time together. It will be his and your decision, with advice from the oncologist, when to stop treatment and choose comfort measures only. ...Read more
Non small cell lung cancer stage 111a. Had lobectomy but cancer remains in chest wall and lymph node. What is life expectancy without treatment?
Variable outcomes: It is not entirely clear whether your cancer is truly stage-3A (it means completely resected, no residual cancer left behind). If there is indeed some tumor left behind in the chest wall, then there is high risk of recurrence which will likely cause you problems within 6 to 12 months. This can be controlled with radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy. So you should reconsider your decision. ...Read more

If so, not much: Albain et al tried to show that surgery improved survival in operable iiia, but there was no statistical benefit. The subset that got just a lobe removed possible benefited, but would need a larger study to prove. Those that had the entire lung removed actually faired worse. For most patients, it is not the thing that makes a difference, but response to chemo/rt signals benefit. ...Read more
