My mom is 50 years a old and has been recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. What is life expectancy?
Can't be certain: There are many variables that affect survival. The lung cancer type and location. Younger people tend to live longer than older people with lung cancer. Women with lung cancer have a greater life expectancy than men with with lung cancer. Every case is different. That being said, the median stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer life expectancy is about 8 months. Five year survival is only 1%. ...Read more
Greatly depends: That depends on many factors: the type of cancer, how much it has spread, whether it is responsive to treatment, whether you have received treatment, etc. Etc. It is very difficult to make a prognostication about "life expectancy." stage 4 cancer, of whatever type, can be very difficult. My mom has stage 4 small cell lung cancer in both lungs, in severe pain no biopsy no trtreatment what happens now? Life expectancy?
Functional status: First, I am so sorry for you and your family. Lung cancer can spread very quickly. You mentioned hospice had been called. In general, that is an option when an individual has a life expectancy of less than 6months. But remember, that is just a prognosis (guess/estimate) not a hard set fact. The most important factors are her function, such as her ability to stand, walk, eat, etc. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Stage 4 lung cancer no chemo tumor grew & cancer spread, clinical trial only now, on oxygen for sob, blood clots in legs, what is life expectancy?
Hard to say/depends.: At this stage of lung cancer, the options are limited as is survival. If treatment is done, it's usually chemotherapy and radiation and/or surgery after adjuvant chemotherapy. There are certainly trials out there and I would recommend talking to your doctor before starting any, but the chance for success is likely limited, as the 5 year survival of stage IV is <5%, but it doesn't hurt to try. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

What can we expect from a stage 4 lung cancer patient with bone metastases- what can be done in case all treatments are ruled out?
Not great,: ....I'm afraid. Without treatment it can be weeks to a few months at best. Treatment can extend it to 6+ months but seldom more than a year. There are exceptions, of course, depends on the age and health of the patient and how much disease there is. If this is about you or a loved one, I wish you the best. Remember none of us can tell for sure how long we have, so live each day fully. ...Read more
Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs from the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more
