My mother has lung cancer. We were told her kidneys are shrinking. Does this mean kidney failure?

I would guess...: ...that too, but "shrinking kidneys" is not a term I would use. Some physicians try hard to explain a situation in lay terms (and with the best of intentions) but I personally think we can help patients understand while still being accurate in our explanations. Don't walk away from a doctor's visit with questions. If u don't understand what he/she said, ask for clarification. Best to you both. ...Read more

It's a choice: Nobody can make this decision for you. It is important that you have an honest and open discussion with your cancer team. You will need to ask what are the reasonable expectations from treatment vs non-treatment? Ultimately, the question only you can answer, after thorough discussion with your team, "will treatment be worse then cancer? What quality of life can I expect after treatment? ". ...Read more

Back pain: The only way to answer your question is to go to your doctor, describe in detail the pain you are having - what brings it on, what makes it better, exact location, does it start one place and go another, how much does it bother you, is it sharp/dull/throbbing. Worked decades in chemical industry. Do I have a high risk of cancer or kidney failure?

It depends: Working in the dye industry/with napthylenes, Cyclophosphamide exposure is a clear risk factor for bladder cancer. If you are/were a smoker you have more risk of renal cancer, and working in the dye industry wouldn't help. Smoking increases risk for many cancers, including lung. It would be best to see your doctor, and let him know so he can tell you exactly what you are at risk for. ...Read more

Is kidney failure linked to bone marrow cancer and if treated is kidney process reversible. Biopsy report says 17 glo. Nonglobally sclerotic 4 ischemic?

It varies: Most cases of kidney failure caused by one of the blood cancers are reversible if detected early and treated promptly. I would have you be patient and be hopeful at least for 4-6 weeks before you will know if this is going to improve or not. ...Read more

Can you tell me how long you can live with lung cancer, chronic renal failure, lymph node metasteses, hernia. Age 87. We need to make plans.

Cancer Prognosis: As you haven't specified the type of cancer I really couldn't even begin to give you a reasonable estimate of survival time. Even with it I would still need to know more about how significant the spread is. Adding in the ESRD (which I would also need to know what stage you are in) certainly impacts your likely longevity. With all these variables you really need to consult with your oncologist. ...Read more
