There is a lump on the top of my foot, about the size of half a ping pong ball. No injury, not bruised should I go to my doctor?
One : One of the things i'd want to know is how long you've had this, does it seem to appear larger one day and smaller another day? If so, you might have a ganglion cyst, which is a cyst filled with thick joint fluid that usually grows from a tendon. Since the top of your foot (and top of the hand) have so many tendons, these are the two most common places for ganglions to appear. They are not dangerous, and never turn malignant. Sometimes they are painful if they're pressing on a nerve, but most times they are painless. An ultrasound would be able to show the presence of fluid in this lump. If there is fluid present, it is 99.9% ganglion, since true tumors do not contain fluid. The conservative treatment for a ganglion is to aspirate it (draw out the fluid) and inject some steroid solution into the area to prevent it from recurring (there is a recurrence rate to these things). The alternative treatment for stubborn, recurrent ganglions is to surgically remove it. This is usually a pretty simple surgery, since they're not all that deep, but there are some important nerves in that area that need to be watched for during the surgery. Hope this helps! good luck. ...Read more
I am experiencing a lump on the top of my foot and now there is a second. They are soft and movable. Also have one on forehead and left hand. Thanks?
Cysts: Your history suggests that these are cysts, often called ganglion cysts when near tendons and joints. The forehead one may not be the same type. A physical exam and ultrasound can give you more information including the diagnosis and treatment options. Generally speaking, these tend to be benign and non-dangerous. In orthopedics, we often will drain these with the guidance of ultrasound. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
