Lump On Shin After Running
How to treat a lump in the lower portion of my leg after running. No pain associated with the lump?
After running yesterday, a tender, red lump has developed on the outside of my leg about 4 inches above my ankle. Its about an inch in diameter.
Yikes......: It sounds as though you may have torn or caused a weakness in the tissue that encases a lower leg muscle. This lump could be the muscle peeking through the herniation. Quite possibly the extensor digitorum longus muscle is involved. Sometimes the bump goes away or get smaller when not standing. At any rate, to remove all doubt, have the bump examined either by a Healthtap orthopedist or your own. ...Read more

Watch and document.: There are just too many things that could cause a small lump to make even an educated guess. The fact that it's not painful, color indicated that is probably not inflamed or infected. The depth of the lump as well as it's firmness could possibly narrow down the possibilities. Keep an eye on it, maybe even take a picture of it, and resubmit the information if the lump gets larger. ...Read more

Whether one jogs daily or just had to sprint to catch a bus one day, he may be having shin splints if he feels throbbing and aching in the shins. Overuse injury...: Sounds like shin splints. You need to reduce intensity and distance to 50-60% levels. Run on flat and forgiving surfaces. You might want to evaluate your shoes and their ware. Application of ice, heat, stretching can all afford some degree of relief, but over use is the problem and reduction of activity is the answer. ...Read more
Time: It is probably a bone contusion with a hematoma. You can initially try ice within 48 hours to reduce swelling. After about 5 days, you can switch to moist heat to try to increase blood flow to area to resorb hematoma quicker. If it hurts to bear weight, be seen to make sure it is not broken. If it gets red and hot, be seen as it can get infection in it. ...Read more
