Woke up today with a stiff neck from below ear downwards, feel unwell and lump on sternocleidomastoid muscle. My neck really tender hurts to touch?
Get checked out: A lump on your sternocleidomastoid could be a lymph node. In that case, you might have an infection or inflammation. There are many causes of stiff neck, but in the setting of swollen lymph nodes, I would be sure to be checked out. Meningitis can cause stiff neck, for example, and you don't want to miss that diagnosis. I would see a doc asap. ...Read more

Uncertain: The description of where this lump is, is not specific enough to be sure. Is it on the side, front or back? It could be a lymph node that is enlarged due to infection, but if it is really from the muscle, and your neck is stiff or sore, then some heat and massage, stretching etc should help to clear the 'knot'. If more appear & continue see your doctor. ...Read more

Could be trapped air: This may sound crazy but I've seen something like this before. In some people if there is a small tear in the lining of the airways or throat air can escape and enter into the tissue. This is known as subcutaneous emphysema. This is more common after some sort of trauma. See your doctor and get appropriate studies. ...Read more
