Lump behind left ear. Hard, doesn't move. Doctor ordered blood work and asked about family cancer history. Could it really be cancer?

A lump is a lump...: A lump is a lump. The differential diagnosis (DDx) of a lump is very broad. Can it be cancer? Yes. Can it be an infected ear with a reactive lymph node? Yes. Can it be 200 other things? Yes. Work with your doctor to get a history, physical exam, and any necessary tests. And follow up over time. ...Read more

I've got a small, hard, fixed in place lump behind my ear lobe, sort of in line with my mouth. It hurts to touch. Could be a sign of cancer?

Level II Lymph Node: What you are describing is a level ii lymph node. These are enlarged when you get a sore throat, and can be enlarged when cancer spreads to them as well. Infections are usually associated with fevers. An imaging study like an MRI might help. ...Read more

You're Likely OK!!: Being scared about cancer is understandable. At your age, many people can have lumps behind their ears, various aches and pains, or a tight throat. The antidote to fear is KNOWLEDGE!!! Don't worry yourself into an ulcer -- see a doctor to have your lump and throat checked, so you can get back to being a healthy, non-worrying young adult!!! Good Luck! ...Read more

I would want to know more about your medical condition and risks for cancer, so schedule w/ an MD ...Read more
