Had Ir port placement on 12/15/17 with no complications. At this time, a pea sized lump has formed at the incision site on my neck. What is it?

Catheter: That "lump" may be the catheter under the skin. It is tunneled from the port on your chest wall up to the vein in your neck, where it enters the bloodstream. Depending on the particulars of the procedure, you may be feeling the catheter itself. Nothing to worry about! If you develop redness, drainage or fever you should get it looked at right away. ...Read more

My husband had a cardio-cath done last week and I have a question not in the literature. He has no discoloration or swelling at the incision site but has a huge hard lump under the skin. Should I insist on his going to the er?

My husband had a cardio-cath done last week and I have a question not in the literature. He has no discoloration or swelling at the incision site but has a huge hard lump under the skin. Should I insist on his going to the er?

I: I assume this was done through the groin, not the arm. It's very common to have a painful bump in the area they inserted the catheter. It will last a week or so. They should have advised him to avoid stairs and lifting for a week. If he were bleeding under his skin, the entire area would be swelling, and he'd be feeling weak and light-headed. When in doubt, call the cardiologist who did the catheterization.

I'm speaking from personal experience, not as a podiatrist. It took a week for my pain and bump to go down.

Who would have thought that the way to a man's heart is through his groin?

Hope this helps. ...Read more
