Yes: If there is pain or swelling in the leg, and you have the additional risk factors of being a smoker on oral contraceptives (I must tell you that when I was in practice, I would NOT prescribe these drugs to smokers), you may well have a deep venous thrombosis, which could cause damage and harm on its own, and can travel to the lung as a pulmonary embolus and cause severe problems and even death. ...Read more

Caution: Splinter hemorrhages does not come from dvt. They come from clots being thrown to the periphery and going through the small arteries that can happen in infection of heart valves or in vasculitis.
