EXERCISE: Two years is a long time to suffer from mankind's most common ache....lowback ache!!!! I suggest that he should see a Physiatrist (Specialist in Musculoskeletal disorders) and start some Physical Therapy/Home Exercises NOW!!!!! I do gym but dont know i have severe sharp pain in left side of my lower back.Pain increases while sitting but not in walking and laying.
Treat muscle sprain: It seems like you have sprained muscle in your left lower back. Apply heat there. Some people report better results with ice than heat. You can use both or either one.
