This irritation of nerves as a result of an abnormal intervertebral disc is referred to as radiculopathy. Aside from a pinched nerve from a disc, other causes can occur. ...Read more

I get lower back pain that radiates to my left leg. I can feel the pain right above the knee, all the way down in my foot as well. ?

Sounds like sciatica: This sounds like a typical case of a sciatica or pain radiating into the leg due to a nerve compression that can be due to a disc herniation usually but there can be other explanations. Generally this is true with pain that goes past the knee and can be confirmed on exam and by imaging with a ct scan or mri. Most get better without surgery. ...Read more

If cortisone shots don't work what would be the next option for treating lower back pain that is sending pain down my leg n bottom?

Nerve damage: Great question... Its very important to treat pain and to prevent nerve damage. There are multiple ways to treat a herniated disc. They include: weight loss, physical therapy, chiropractic care, disc decompression (traction), epidural injections, intradiscal procedures, and surgery. An EMG is the best test to see if you have old or active nerve damage (if so- you need surgery). ...Read more

I have really bad lower back pain. It doesn't shoot down my leg or get numb. Hurts the worst when i stand up from a sitting position. What can it be?

Mechanical back pain: Back pain that doesn't radiate and gets worse after standing is usually musculoskeletal back pain. When we sit our iliopsoas muscles get tighter and then when we stand that tightness causes pain. Usually, a back extension program is a quick and easy fix. But see your doctor for treatment options. ...Read more

Lower back pain mainly in middle. Doesn't shoot down leg, no numbness. Really bad to go from sitting to standing. Need pillow behind back when sitting?

Disc pain: Likely a disc related pain. This pain feels worse while sitting and leaning forward or slouching, getting up from a siting position, bending forward, reaching out and above. Most damaged discs heal n their own if the causative factor is avoided such a lifting heavy objects, bending down all the time etc. Pillow behind the back extends the spine and relieves pressure on a damaged disc. ...Read more

I'm having severe lower back pain. Pain goes down right leg and throbbs. Have history on protruding disk. Why is pain so severe?

It may be that there: Is a further protrusion of that disc or at least a further tear of the outer part of the disc known as the annulus & called an annular tear or both-any of those scenarios may cause increased pain symptoms. One also has to consider other causes of pain in the region & if the pain is so severe you should seek medical attention for an accurate diagnosis & appropriate treatment. ...Read more

Ive had lower back pain for about a week now. It does go down my right leg but Im feeling a bit nauseous. Could it be a kidney infeciton?

Ive had lower back pain for about a week now. It does go down my right leg but Im feeling a bit nauseous. Could it be a kidney infeciton?

Less likely: Lower back pain that radiates down one leg is due to compression of the sciatic nerve by a herniated or bulging disc or arthritic changes in the spine. The pain is usually located in the low back well below the level of the umbilicus. Kidney pain from infection is located in the back at or above the level of the umbilicus(belly button). Kidney infection will be accompanied by a fever. ...Read more

Had lower back pain x 1 wk. Also in buttocks. Better now but not gone.. Now have tingling down one leg. Should it improve since back is improving

It may improve...: Most cases of back pain will improve, especially with conservative therapies. However, the tingling down the leg indicates a nerve issue, the severity of which can only be determined with diagnostic testing such as MRI and/or EMG (best done 8 wks after symptom onset). It is possible to have isolated numbness/tingling of the leg without accompanied back pain. ...Read more
