Why do kids develop a low white blood cell count?

Why do kids develop a low white blood cell count?

Several ways: White blood cells are created by the bone marrow, so anything that suppresses bone marrow affects white blood cells. Some viral illnesses such as mono can do it, as well as an overwhelming bacterial infection. Some children naturally have low white cell counts. Others have genetic cycles where the white count gets very low. Occasionally a bone marrow disease such as leukemia is responsible.

Low white blood cell count -- does it mean infection is gone?

NOT NECESSARILY: Sometimes your WBC count can fall precipitously as an infection worsens, because they adhere to blood vessel walls and then enter the tissues and are consumed by the process of fighting bacteria. If, however, the WBC was quite high, it may come down as treatment is effective.

Can hep c cause a low white blood cell count?

How low?: In a round about way, yes. Hepatitis C is a common cause of cirrhosis. Scarring of the liver causes splenic enlargement, and an enlarged spleen, from any cause, can cause reduction in white blood cells. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex.

Is it true that a low white blood cell count be a sign of cancer?

Is it true that a low white blood cell count be a sign of cancer?

Possibly: While other diseases can cause low white blood cell counts, the possibility of cancer in the bone marrow is always raised when this is seen. Cancer cells can replace the normal cells of the bone marrow. The normal cells produce mature circulating blood cells (white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets). If they are compromised, so are their products.

Recent blood test shows I have a low white blood cell count. All other indicators are normal. What causes this and what do I do to fix it. 45yr, 85kg?

Recent blood test shows I have a low white blood cell count. All other indicators are normal. What causes this and what do I do to fix it. 45yr, 85kg?

Recheck WBC NO Fixes: I see this all the time in my practice= low WBC (white blood count). It may be normal if you have no other signs/symptoms. What is important is the trend--is your WBC count dropping over time? So my initial advice is to re-check in 1 month (with a WBC differential). Referral to a hematologist is needed if: WBC continues to drop, 'abnormal cells' on differential, low red cells or platelets.
