Aging: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, The weight gain may be due to general slowing of metabolism with aging. Your thyroid function test results seem okay. You may need to reduce your intake of food and exercise more. ...Read more

My TSH is a little low. T4 is a little high. I can't take the thyroid meds. Will a partial thyroidectomy help? (feeling very sick)

My TSH is a little low. T4 is a little high. I can't take the thyroid meds. Will a partial thyroidectomy help? (feeling very sick)

Possibly.: If you can't take thyroid meds, surgery or radioactive iodine ablation are useful. In fact radioactive iodine ablation is effective, with 40-70% of patients becoming hypothyroid after its administration. You might want to just observe since your T4 and your TSH are only slightly high and low respectively, and you might still have normal function. It would be best to see your doctor to decide. ...Read more

What is the significance of a low T3 (liothyronine) uptake with normal TSH and ft4 7 weeks post total thyroidectomy and on levothyroxine for 7 wks?

What is the significance of a low T3 (liothyronine) uptake with normal TSH and ft4 7 weeks post total thyroidectomy and on levothyroxine for 7 wks?

No significance: T3 (liothyronine) uptake is an old test used to indirectly measure t4. Now that we have assay to accurate measure free t4, we don't use this test anymore. If your TSH and free T4 is normal on levothyroxine, then you are doing fine on the current dose. No need to change anything at this point. ...Read more

Total thyroidectomy 4 mo ago. High TSH & t4, low t3 (liothyronine). Feeling very hypo. Increases in levothyroxine not helping symptoms. Sliding downhill fast! Help!

Thyroid: Something does not sound right.
A high TSH with a high T4 is very uncommon.
It is possible, but unlikely that your pituitary gland is producing too much TSH.
You need to see your thyroid surgeon or your regular doctor as soon as possible. ...Read more

10 days ago had right hemi thyroidectomy now TSH supressed and free T4 and T3 (liothyronine) very low should I wait for equilibrium of thyroid or take levoxthyroxin?

Not an issue for: Self treatment. Why did you have hemi-thyroidectomy? Please consult with your doctor rather than trying to adjust the medication on your own. There may be reason to let you go into hypo-thyroid state, depending on the pathology that called for resection of the thyroid. ...Read more

Hyperthyroid 5 years with toxic nodule pre hemi thyroidectomy supressed TSH elevated T4 T3 (liothyronine) 10 days post op TSH supressed low T4 T3 (liothyronine) am I hyper or hypo?

Hyperthyroid 5 years with toxic nodule pre hemi thyroidectomy supressed TSH elevated T4 T3 (liothyronine) 10 days post op TSH supressed low T4 T3 (liothyronine) am I hyper or hypo?

Difficult to answer: Since you're on ptu (propylthiouracil) which inhibits thyroid function and hormone production. Would have to know when and how much ptu (propylthiouracil) you've been taking and serial lab values to determine the answer. If your TSH is still suppressed, you're probably still hyperthyroid, but more or longer therapy w/ptu (propylthiouracil) may help. Methimazole may be safer than put. Think about radio iodine therapy w/your doctor. ...Read more

An overactive: Thyroid can also be treated successfully with either radioiodine or anti-thyroid drugs and avoid the potential risks and dangers of surgery. Talk it over with your doctor, and even consider getting a second opinion before making your decision. ...Read more

What does a low TSH level mean?

Need to look at T3 (liothyronine): And free t4. Low tsh, depending on the sensitivity of the assay, indicates thyroid hyper-function. However, the suspected hyperthyroidism needs to be confirmed with high levels of T3 (liothyronine) and free t4. All lab tests need to be evaluated in the clinical context and it would be prudent to take up the issue with your doctor. ...Read more

Could rhodiola cause low TSH levels?

Could rhodiola cause low TSH levels?

Unlikely but...: Rhodiola is known to improve thyroid function and thus might be expected to reduce TSH levels somewhat (though more research on this is needed). However, a low TSH tends to be a sign of hyperthyroidism and, as far as I know, rhodiola is not known to stimulate the thyroid to the point of hyperthyroidism. ...Read more

What can be the cause of low testostorone and low TSH count?

Due to thyca can you have low TSH and high tg? Or if tg increases does the tsh?

Low TSH unlikely: Thyroid cancer usually does not cause a low TSH (unless you are taking thyroid hormone). Most thyroid cancers do not function as well as normal thyroid tissue. Elevated thyroglobulin is a nonspecific finding, seen in most disorders of the thyroid. It can serve as a tumor marker for recurrent thyroid cancer as long as the thyroid has been completely removed. High tg has nothing to do with tsh. ...Read more

What does it mean if I have low TSH and low freet4? Both. 6

What does it mean when you have a low TSH but you also have a low t4?

Thyroid labs: Hi. See an endocrinologist. Make sure it's a free T4 (not a TOTAL T4). If you have low TSH and a low free T4, that's compatible with pituitary disease causing hypothyroidism (so called "secondary hypothyroidism"). IF you have that (not saying you do), you need to be checked for pituitary problems and other pituitary deficiencies (adrenal, most promptly); If u have secondary hypothy, CHECK ADRENALS ...Read more

Stress can increase tsh, but how high cortisol causes low TSH where as stress causes high cortisol production.?

Stress can increase tsh, but how high cortisol causes low TSH where as stress causes high cortisol production.?

Cortisol: This is a very complex system. In very basic terms cortisol is produced in response to stress and feeds back inhibiting production of itself (inhibiting crh and acth). Cortisol also inhibits TSH production (as well as growth hormone, estrogen, testosterone and lh production). Thus limiting the response to stress. It is though in chronic stress this feedback mechanism breaks down. ...Read more

27 yrs old. This years blood work showed: Low TSH, and total T-3 and free T-4 are both high. Last year's test were fine. What could thus indicate?

Mild hyperthyroidism: Unless you are taking thyroid medication (and taking too much) this could mean mild hyperthyroidism. If your doc measured TSH, FT3 and FT4, (s)he must have suspected something. Most likely cause of hyperthyroidism in a 27 yo woman is Graves disease or one of several forms of thyroiditis. You may need to see an Endocrinologist. ...Read more

What could be the reason for a low T4 and low TSH on the bloodwork?

How low?: If these were taken during a time that you were emotionally distraught, and they are not strikingly removed from the reference range (which is set so that several percent of healthies fall outside), your physician will repeat them when your life gets better. If way-low, pituitary disease is a concern. ...Read more
