Complicated.: This is a great question. The major worry of platelets being too lowis unexplained bleeding into the head, which can be very serious. This risk is present at different levels for different patients. It depends on quite a bit of variables: age, recent injury, other illnesses, current bleeding, chance of platelet recovery, etc. Clearly if there is troublesome bleeding, they are too low. ...Read more
Bleeding: Platelets help our bodies clot. SO, when platelets are too low (how low is "too low" is very situation and individual dependent!) we will bleed. Often bleeding from low platelets takes the form of bleeding in the mouth and gums. Sometimes a dotted pattern, almost like a rash, called petechiae, can appear on the calves and shins. ...Read more

Depending on how low, your overall health, your medications, comorbid medical condition your doctor will determine the proper treatment. Normal level is >150, 000. Most people don't have problems if above 100, 000. Below 100, 000 needs more attention. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Various: Low= error in test, increased breakdown or decreased production. Some sampling methods (fingerstick)are more prone to give inacurate results.Antibodies can form in certain conditions that destroy plts soon after they are made or they can be used up quickly in excessive clotting states. The production sites in the bone marrow can be invaded & shut down as in leukemia. ...Read more

Depends: Very low platelets can increase risk of bleeding - obviously could be dangerous. Very high platelets (usually above a million) could increase risk of clots (strokes etc) & even bleeding in certain high risk pts with "myeloproliferative" disorder. The most important question is what is the cause & how high or how low. Sometimes platelets could increase because of iron deficiency or inflammation. ...Read more
Bleeding risk: Low platelets can mean an increase risk of bleeding. Bleeding can even happen without good cause. The lower the platelet count, the higher the risk for bleeding. The bleeding can be nosebleeds, gum bleeding, heavy periods. The most concerning bleeding would be bleeding inside the skull. This is unusual, but would likely cause a headache and nausea. ...Read more
Bleeding risk: Platelet help to stop bleeding if you bleed. So if your platelet level is low- you will be at risk to bleed. The lower your platelet level the higher your bleeding risk. Spontaneous bleeding can happen when your platelet count is below 10 k-and bleeding can happen anywhere. It can manifest as skin bleeding ( bruising, petchiae ( red tiny dos on skin), hematoma; nose bleed, gum bleeding, etc. ...Read more
Depends on cause: Platelets help form clots. Low platelets are caused by lack of production or destruction. Immune-mediated thrombocytopenic purpura (itp), a condition where the body makes auto-antibodies against platelets, can be treated with medicines (ivig, win rho, sometimes steroids). If production is the problem, the cause needs to be found. Can be simply caused by a virus, or be as serious as leukemia. ...Read more
Clotting disorder: Too high a platelet count may cause blood clots to form in blood vessels and deprive affected tissue of blood supply. Too low platelet count causes bleeding, usually in skin and mucus membrane, but can result in internal bleeding it the count is too low, i.e., less than 10 k/cmm. ...Read more
