What is plasma osmolarity? Plasma osmolality?

What is plasma osmolarity? Plasma osmolality?

Conc. electrolytes.: These refer to the concentration of electrolytes in the body/plasma, or the electrolyte-water balance. These measure the same thing, only that osmolality is the number of osmoles per kilogram of solvent or osm/kg, while osmolarity is the number of osmoles per liter of solution or osm/ltr. Osmolality excludes the solute, while osmolarity includes it, so osmolality has a slightly higher reading. ...Read more

Adnorm. Blood & cfs results: high: CSF protein-47, high cfs albumin-30.9; low total protein-5.7, low gamma globulin-.5, low IgG quantitative -621 worry?

CSF: Some experts consider CSF protein levels to be normal if the value is equal to or below your age in years. I don't think in your case there is a reason to worry. Other CSF components are important as well. Check with your physician to see if there is any reasons to worry. Hope you feel well soon. ...Read more

Blood tests show high mean platelet volume, low platelet count, high urobilinogen, high WBC, high clumpy platelet morphology. Related? conerns?

Why the tests?: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it might have helped to have the actual values rather than high and low. Why were the tests done? It would be prudent to discuss these with the doctor who ordered the test as s/he knows more about your health. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. Get HPV vaccine. ...Read more

Pediatric cancer? low RBC, low WBC, low platelets, low IGM, high MCV, low neutrophils, low monocytes and low eosinophils, occasional myelocytes,

Tough set of labs: Suppression of multiple cell lines certainly is a concerning finding on a CBC. Yes, there are pediatric cancers that may present with this type of blood test results. Talking to your heme/onc specialist as soon as possible would be advisable! But don't jump to conclusions because a specialist with the "whole picture" may give you a very surprising answer! ...Read more

What causes high globulin, but low globulin albumin ratio?

What causes high globulin, but low globulin albumin ratio?

Liver blood tests: The liver is an amazing organ- it does many things including making proteins your body needs. Albumin is a major protein product of the liver. Chronic illness can cause that to decline- esp. if you're not eating. Globulins are other proteins usually made to fight diseases like infections- perhaps you've been fighting an illness for a few weeks/months that explain this pattern. ...Read more

Indication of high human ferritin, low mcv, low mch, low mchc, normal hemoglobin?

Suspect thal minor: No lab value means anything apart from a human being, and labs are numbers that may be far removed from the reference range, or just at the edges. I strongly suggest you do not self-diagnose but instead use the internet to become literate about health and the diagnostic process so you can be a partner with your physician. ...Read more

High wbc, low hematocrit, low mcv, low mch, high platelet count, low lymphocytes and monocytes - what does this all mean?

Hard to say...: It sounds like it may be an infection but it's impossible to say without more information including if you have any other signs or symptoms. High protein level in blood results?

HIgh protein level: High blood protein (hbp) level can be caused by dehydration causing bengin elevation of proteins. Other more serious causes of hbp are chronic inflammation, ameyloidosis, hiv/aids, multiple myeloma and monoclonical gammopathies. I would suggest your seeing an hematologist if the cause of your hbp is not due to dehydration as soon as you can to arrive at the correct cause of your hbp level. ...Read more

ALT low 30's thru 10-yr illness. Chronic dehydration, low phosphorus, low WBC, high alk phos, L sodium, unstable glucose, H creatinine, L protein?

Not the key: I appreciate your interest in labs. Your ALT is in what most labs count as normal range. You haven't provided actually numbers for any lab, and for those you cite, only very markedly out-of-range values are helpful. No responsible physician would even direct you based on these labs, though it would surprise me if a nephrologist found you to have a mild interstitial nephritis. ...Read more

Low aldosterone, normal renin. Sodium 141(135-145), potassium 3.4(3.5-5.0) confused, shouldnt sodium be lower if low aldosterone and potassium higher?

Sodium is difficult: Sodium regulation is complex and not directly related to any single hormone. Mineralocorticoids like Fludrocortisone can increase sodium a bit and do cause sodium retention of sodium, but the sodium level is mostly regulated by a hormone called adh (vasopressin). ...Read more
