What causes low oxygen levels in the elderly?

What causes low oxygen levels in the elderly?

Other diseases: If you ask me what causes low o2 in a perfectly normal and healthy elderly it makes a difference. There is an alveolar to arterial ratio that changes with age, and o2 is lower in elderly by this notion alone but no to point of hypoxia. There is such thing as senile emphysema by age alone, with the changes like that of the skin. See the compressibility of finger as the machine could restrict pulse. ...Read more

Hypoxia (Definition)

Hypoxia, is a condition in which the body as a whole or a region of the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply. It is classified into 4 groups: - hypoxemic - oxygen is low - anemic - decreased ability for hemoglobin to carry oxygen. - ischemic - decreased blood flow. - histotoxic - oxygen is reaching the cells, but the cells are unable to ...Read more

Can I still sleep with low oxygen levels?

Can I still sleep with low oxygen levels?

Yes: However, chronically low oxygen levels can cause changes in the heart. Figuring out why is important. Possible causes include chronic lung diseases, neuromuscular weakness or chest wall deformity, pulmonary vascular diseases, and of course sleep disordered breathing such as sleep apnea. Weight also plays a big role. ...Read more

Is there anything that can cause low oxygen levels to not improve in a 6 year old?

Many things: Infection, poor air flow into the lungs, poor blood flow to and from the lungs, a heart problem such as a hole within the heart could all cause this. So could a lot of other things, all of which warrant thorough investigation. ...Read more

Can the body adapt to low oxygen levels?

Can the body adapt to low oxygen levels?

Yes: Think about americans who live in denver, sherpas that live in tibet, & the maya in south america. These are populations of people who have become accustomed in one way or another to a lower atmospheric oxygen level, and in the mayans a lower blood oxygen level. Another sea-level example would be a person with emphysema who may run a blood oxygen level of 88% and still be walking around home depot. ...Read more

Please explain what it means if you have low oxygen levels?

Oxygen: The normal o2 in the blood is calculated as that which should be calculated by knowing the lung, the age, water vapor pressure, etc. Very complicated. For our purposes, we set at that oxygen which will give us a saturation of hemoglobin at least 90% in the arteries. If it is lower than that it is low. ...Read more

What does it mean if you have low oxygen levels in your blood tests?

What does it mean if you have low oxygen levels in your blood tests?

Lung disease: Is the commonest reason for a low level of oxygen in the blood. It can also happen in heart disease if the heart is failing and fluid builds up in otherwise-healthy lungs, or if there is a hole in the heart, causing blood to bypass the right heart circulation into the lungs and skip picking up oxygen there. These are examples of some common causes. Smoking, high altitude=examples of lung reasons. ...Read more

I've got low oxygen levels (87%) but I can't understand why I'm wheezing?

Bronchospasm...: Wheezing typically is a result of bronchospasm which has many different causes. Possible etiologies include asthma, copd, pneumonia, acute or chronic bronchitis, etc. All of these can lead to low oxygen levels so you need to see your doctor for a precise diagnosis and treatment. Your oxygen level qualifies you for supplemental oxygen therapy and your doctor can prescribe this for you as well. ...Read more

If low oxygen levels are causing seizures would the best way to treat them be finding out why oxygen is dropping?

If that is the case?: When you experience a seizure, your oxygen level might dip and your carbon dioxide will also change. Many metabolic changes accompany seizures. I suspect that oxygenation due to seizure activity, not the reverse. You do not list your current anti-seizure meds, but I presume you are taking some medication. Altering your medicines may successfully control the seizures. ...Read more

Sometimes I can't seem to breathe right. At the ER I was told I had low oxygen levels. What should I do since I don't breathe right?

Can Pfo cause low oxygen levels while exercise. My oxygen levels drops down to about 88 while I am walking, then at rest it goes up to 98?

It can: It can but it shouldn't. Talk to your cardiologist. PFO tend to be small and under low pressure so when you exercise it should not effect things as much. Sometimes there is a pressure reversal and this is not a good sign since it can mean weakening of the heart. ...Read more

Its hard for me to breathe. I get really bad headaches. Like all the time. And its really hard for me to remember stuff. Possible low oxygen levels?

Possibly: Difficulty breathing and headaches are potentially serious symptoms. I would get into your primary care as soon as you can. Testing oxygen levels is a simple matter of putting your finger in a probe that most offices have these days. That said, presuming you are typically healthy, low oxygen levels would not be the first thing to come to my mind as an explanation for your symptoms. ...Read more

Transient issue: Fetal o2 generally runs low levels while they extract it from mom with the placenta but it is adequate for their needs. Arterial blood gases, very low oxygen levels found in my baby. Will he have cp?

Hard to say: The fetus has low oxygen levels compared to the rest of us for the duration of the pregnancy. Any lab value must be put in context with what is happening. How low, for how long and with what other abnormalities provides a better predictive value. I have copd, was put on oxygen due to a bad cold and low oxygen levels. Why am I short of breath while on this oxygen? It's set at 2.

I have copd, was put on oxygen due to a bad cold and low oxygen levels. Why am I short of breath while on this oxygen? It's set at 2.

Several Factors: Your shortness of breath can be due to inadequate oxygen getting into your blood. This is a function of gas exchange.
It might be manageable by increasing your oxygen, but you should check with your doctor first. Sometimes increasing the oxygen can actually make you breathe in and out less, resulting in the retention of carbon dioxide - which is bad.

Good luck and feel free to ask more. ...Read more

What are causes of low oxygen in elderly?

Not normal: As we age, our lungs become less elastic and with aging changes, there is less transfer of oxygen, so more likely to have low oxygen levels. However, healthy elderly will not manifest with low oxygen levels unless there is underlying lung disease (ie emphysema) or an illness (ie pneumonia). If one is bedbound, there maybe less useable lung space, and lower oxygen levels may occur. ...Read more

Does asthma cause hypoxia? What is the oxygen saturation in people who have asthma?

Does asthma cause hypoxia? What is the oxygen saturation in people who have asthma?

It can: Asthma can reduce the area of the lung available for co2/oxygen exchange and can do so with variable intensity during an asthma attack. Given a normal o2 % of 94-100, I have seen levels below 50% recorded but patients are usually quite symptomatic below 90%. When an attack is passed and the patient relaxed, the levels return to normal with work of breathing decreased to normal. ...Read more

Please explain why no changes in partial pressure of oxygen in the case of anemia hypoxia?

Hemoglobin: Hemoglobin has four ligands to carry o2, I believe usually 2 used. You give o2, has dissolubility, and membrane transport to enter the cells to the hemoglobin, bind and in tissues where there is acid and low o2 tension and other factors are released to those tissues for energy processing. You give more o2 and the o2 in the plasma increases but not in the saturation of the hemoglobin due to above. ...Read more

I have sleep apnea and a hypoxia index of 17. Is 17 bad or good? I am going on cpap and oxygen. Looking for an answer. Thanks!

Moderately bad: Apnea-hypopnea index of 17 means you obstruct (stop breathing) or partially obstruct an average of 17 times per hour (normal is <5). More important, however, is the degree of oxygen deprivation caused by the disruption. I have many patients who have ahi > 90. If your blood o2 levels are low, your regimen is great. If not low, you can use dental device, likely with good success. ...Read more
