HFE mutation with low *6.7* ferritin and 61% sat. Do I need high sats AND high ferritin for iron deposits in body? Concern for low ferritin? Thanks!

Can be Iron def: Hemochromatosis results in increased iron absorption from diet. But it will not stop iron deficiency if you are losing iron/blood such as menstruation or pregnancy. Low ferritin says iron stores are low. High transferrin sat says you absorb excess iron from what you eat. Women with homozygous HC get organ damage about a decade later than men for this reason. If you are anemic take (!) iron briefly ...Read more

What do an Iron level of 70 , a TIBC of 345, a Iron sat of 20%, and a Ferritin level of 138 mean? High blood pressure and PCOS

Normal: Those are all normal levels and says that your body has enough iron and enough (and not too much) of the iron carrying protein in the blood. ...Read more

Can calcium deficiency cause multiple broken arms? 50 # total but osteoporosis only in left leg not arms. Low calcium levels med-high impact falls

Can calcium deficiency cause multiple broken arms? 50 # total but osteoporosis only in left leg not arms. Low calcium levels med-high impact falls

Most likely not: Hypocalcemia needs confirmation by measurement of the serum ionized calcium level. When the diagnosis is confirmed by the finding of a serum calcium level lower than 8.2 mg/dl or an ionized calcium level lower than 4.4 mg/dl attention should turn toward seeking the cause. When we find the cause the treatment will directed to that. Heck with endocrinologists. Good luck. ...Read more

Yes it is high: It is high as normal ferritin level in women is 12to150ng/ml.Discuss the result along with hemoglobin, and iron level etc with your doctor. ...Read more

My toddlers iron level at 9.1 and low hemoglobin consistently even although he eats a diet rich in iron and vit c. What can cause this?

My toddlers iron level at 9.1 and low hemoglobin consistently even although he eats a diet rich in iron and vit c. What can cause this?

Needs iron supplemen: Your son seems to have an iron deficiency anemia and needs iron supplement. Iron rich diet does not provide enough iron to elevate his hemoglobin level and replete iron reserve. Check with his pediatrician. ...Read more

Is hemoglobin a good indicator of iron levels if high orlow iron levels?

Yes, in general: If the iron level is low for long enough the hemoglobin will go down. So a normal hemoglobin level tells us that there is no significan iron deficiency...Yet you can have mild iron deficit yet have a normal hemoglobin. So it does not equate with iron levels exactly but more or less...So it is good, not a perfect substitute. ...Read more

Why would there be a low hemoglobin and low hematocrit as well as low RBC count after left hip replacement?

Why would there be a low hemoglobin and low hematocrit as well as low RBC count after left hip replacement?

Blood loss: Post-op blood loss anemia most likely. Most patients lose 4 grams of HGB from surgery. Over time, with good nutrition, the blood counts will normalize. ...Read more

If ferritin level is high (double uln) but iron and tibc are low in pt. With remote gastric bypass, is iron replacement still recommended.?

If ferritin level is high (double uln) but iron and tibc are low in pt. With remote gastric bypass, is iron replacement still recommended.?

Probable: A high ferritin can be interpreted as an acute phase reactant or chronic inflammation, but if your iron level is low, this can suggest deficiency. Having gastric bypass does cause iron absorption issues including others such as calcium. Routine specific labs are recommended for all bypass patients. Have your primary take a further look at this whether you would need chronic iron supplements. ...Read more

Am I at higher risk for injury in hockey with a low body fat percentage?

Am I at higher risk for injury in hockey with a low body fat percentage?

No u need Muscle mas: Athletes tend to be at low end of this scale due to their increased lean weight (muscle mass). While low levels of body fat seem to be related to improved performance, body composition alone is not a great predictor of sports success. A linebacker needs to have enough body mass (lean and fat weight) to generate high forces and avoid injury. Body fat among elite athletes vary largely so check up. ...Read more

Complex!: A 27 y.o. with osteoporosis immediately raises the concern for further evaluation. Given a history of an eating disorder if this is still present the Ca on lab reports may not be accurate as the level is effected by Albumin levels which are often low in people with eating disorders causing the Ca to appear low. Can check free Ca. Also need to look at Phos, Mag, Vit D (make sure on enough), iPTH. ...Read more

My iron is low. Hemoglobin low side of normal, ferritin 7, saturation 9%. Dr suggested iron ivs. Is this safe? Risks side effects and chances of thwm.

It's your call: I think they're safe enough, the chances of serious harm from them is low, and you'll feel better faster. Some folks do get sickish during the infusion. I do trust that a cause for your iron deficiency has been sought adequately -- I've seen colon cancer missed in a woman in her 20's with fatal results. If you're deficient due to monthy loss, talk about supplements; if from reflux, Rx'ing this. ...Read more

Can diet be a cause for low ferritin level in a woman aged 35? Value is 9

Can diet be a cause for low ferritin level in a woman aged 35? Value is 9

Iron deficiency: Low ferritin means the person mentioned is likely iron deficient. Iron deficiency occurs due to blood loss. The most common cause of low ferritin in premenopausal women is menstrual bleeding. Diet is only a factor to the extent that one isn't consuming sufficient iron in their foods to compensate for the iron loss (from bleeding). ...Read more

My recent lab tests came back with Iron level of 30, transferrin of 20%, low vitamin D, high B12 and high folate. Is this cause for concern?

Lab values: Low iron exists. Low vitamin D exists. These are not major threats but should be remedied. Take iron daily as a supplement. And add Vit d as a supplement. A real good iron pill is vitron C A good dose of Vit D is 1000 units per day ...Read more

If your normal platelet count is at the high end of normal, could eating many veggies rich in vitamin K cause platelets to raise to 450,000 -500,000?

Veggies raising plat: Very unlikely that your platelets are increased due to eating vegetables. Platelets are also acute phase reactants.. Meaning they may be transient high due to a minor infection or inflammation. Repeat platelet count after 3-4 weeks. If high may need further workup for thrombocytosis. ...Read more
