Iron accumulates: In Hemochromatosis, your body absorbs too much iron. Even if your diet is low iron, as it should be, you can still over time accumulate iron in your tissues again since the underlying problem with iron metabolism is ever present. Ferritin is also a marker of inflammation, and often rises during infection etc. If you have had any such issues lately, it could be a result of that as well.

Dad, 70, post brain surgery, also bleeding in stomach. Fast drop Hb level. Not low on Iron/B12. Suggest diet and avoid? Is protein drink okay?

Stop bleeding first: The physicians treating him should be working on stopping all active stomach bleeding. A balanced protein rich and iron rich diet will give him the building blocks to recuperate.

My toddlers iron level at 9.1 and low hemoglobin consistently even although he eats a diet rich in iron and vit c. What can cause this?

Needs iron supplemen: Your son seems to have an iron deficiency anemia and needs iron supplement. Iron rich diet does not provide enough iron to elevate his hemoglobin level and replete iron reserve. Check with his pediatrician.

Serum iron a bit low not anaemic or anything. Can i fix this with diet instead of supplements from doctor? I also started 17mg iron supplement a day.

Yes: You are doing it right. Not all people can tolerate the iron pills. Green leafy vegetables are healthy in many ways and are good sources of iron.

I have had low ferritin levels for 2 years now and I've been taking an iron supplement regularly for a year along side high iron diet and still anemic?

I have had low ferritin levels for 2 years now and I've been taking an iron supplement regularly for a year along side high iron diet and still anemic?

Iron deficient: Sometimes, even though eating a high iron diet, the absorption is decreased. Diet= rich in iron- red meat, beans, milk and green leafy veg. You can try taking ferrous fumarate (Ferrette's on amazon) 325 mg po q day to help with the iron absorption. Retake the serum iron/ferritin in 3-4 months of trial.

I have the coil so i don't get periods eat healthy diet of fish fruit and meats but my iron levels are still really low, why?

Iron loss?: If your iron levels are "really low, " you need to have this investigated. You could be losing "occult" blood, and this could make you anemic. In some cases also, people are not absorbing iron well from their diets. Hoping you work with your physician about this. Be well.

What can cause anemia? Do sport almost everyday. In a blood test had low iron just had another test to confirm it. Eat varied diet inc carbs meat&veg

Find the cause: Low serum iron, correct? It may be something as simple as heavy periods, or you may be losing blood from an ulcer or tumor. Your physician has a duty to you to figure out what's going on; many young women can't meet a woman's extra need for iron just with meat-eating though this is your easiest source for iron.

What is the optimal serum ferritin level for hair health? Can heavy periods and/or a vegetarian diet w/inadequate iron intake cause low ferritin level

What is the optimal serum ferritin level for hair health? Can heavy periods and/or a vegetarian diet w/inadequate iron intake cause low ferritin level

See below: Ferritin levels are not associated with hair health. Heavy periods and vegetarian diet could lead to iron deficiency, and low serum ferritin. It can be easily addressed by taking oral iron and multivitamins. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex.

Tested -ve for wheat allergy but great relief to gas and lethargy and digestion aftr gluten free diet.low b12, iron ,vit d. Am i gluten sensitive?

Tested -ve for wheat allergy but great relief to gas and lethargy and digestion aftr gluten free diet.low b12, iron ,vit d. Am i gluten sensitive?

Likely: Wheat allergy is different from gluten sensitivity which requires tests like IgAtTG or genetic markers to detect. With low B12, iron etc, I suspect that you do have gluten intolerance and need to avoid all gluten. If possible get to a GI doctor since the IgA tTG is unreliable when off gluten. Avoidance and supplement for nutrient and vitamin replacement is the key.

How do I get iron into my diet?

How do I get iron into my diet?

Red meat: Red meat is a good source of iron. Depending how much you need, you can also consider iron supplement pills. It might be cheaper than purchasing red meat. Certain vegetables like spinach have iron, but they are not as easily absorbed as the iron in red meat.

How do I get more iron in my diet?

How do I get more iron in my diet?

Many ways: Dietary sources of iron come in two forms. Heme iron occurs in animal products like red meat, liver, fish and poultry. Heme iron is the most easily absorbed type of iron, although it is much less common than non-heme iron, which is present in beans, lentils, spinach, tofu and raisins. Non-heme iron is also added to fortified foods like cereals, breads and oatmeal.
