Is high RBC folate (folic acid) associated with vitamin B12 deficiency?

Is high RBC folate (folic acid) associated with vitamin B12 deficiency?

Not likely: Please consult this site for info in this topic. Folate (folic acid) and B12 are needed for efficient red cell production and other functions, but lack of one does not increase the other. http://www.webmd.com/diet/folic-acid. ...Read more

Low Folate Level (Definition)

Folic acid deficiency can cause severe birth defects of the brain and spinal cord known as neural tube defects. In some cases, there may be no noticeable signs of folic acid deficiency, and it is diagnosed in pregnant women only after a child is born with a neural tube defect. Usually, though, your health care provider can detect the defect with blood work and ultrasound during your prenatal checkups. When women take the recommended amount of folic acid before they conceive and through the first trimester of pregnancy, 50% to 70% of neural tube defects are prevented. Yet recent research by March of Dimes shows that many women are unaware of the ...Read more

Does taking folic acid supplements lower homocystene levels?

Does taking folic acid supplements lower homocystene levels?

Partly: High homocysteine is commonly due to methylation insufficiency. Folate (folic acid) is just one cog in the machinery. Other factors include magnesium, b12, zinc, b6. Lead toxicity can impair methylation. Use the best active form of folate (folic acid) which is l-methylfolate (folic acid). ...Read more

Dexpression, lathergic, low level of vitamin b12. And vitamin d deficiency, low level of energy?

Dexpression, lathergic, low level of vitamin b12. And vitamin d deficiency, low level of energy?

And your question?: I'm not sure what you are asking. Yes, vit d deficiency can cause fatigue. It is easy to correct with 5-8000 iu of d3/day. B12 deficiency can be serious too- try 1000 mcg of sublingual b12/day ; if that does not help try injections. See http://bit.Ly/1fnt3ox ; http://bit.Ly/1607tg3 if fatigue persists after correcting then see a good doc to explore the many other possible causes of fatigue. ...Read more

What would cause elevated B12 and folate (folic acid) levels?

What would cause elevated B12 and folate (folic acid) levels?

Stop worrying: We see these from time to time. They are no cause for concern. Reference ranges are set for the vast majority of people. Just be happy. Elevated B12 has some arcane significance in hematology but it does not apply to healthy people. Just be glad. ...Read more

Previous ida. Now high B12 and folate (folic acid) levels. Ferritin result is not back. Significant hair loss and sob? Could high folate (folic acid) mask B12 deficiency? Thx

Previous ida. Now high B12 and folate (folic acid) levels. Ferritin result is not back. Significant hair loss and sob? Could high folate (folic acid) mask B12 deficiency? Thx

Masks anemia only: High folate (folic acid) can mask megaloblastic anemia caused by B12 deficiency but does not affect B12 levels. The high B12 levels you have are proof that you don't have B12 deficiency. I don't know what ida is. Hair loss ; sob can have many causes. It sounds like you are being evaluated for possible causes. ...Read more

Can folate (folic acid) deficiency cause pregnancy loss?

Sure.: Folate (folic acid) is essential for rapidly replicating tissues, such as the early embryo and placenta. Folate (folic acid) deficiency can certainly increase your chances of early pregnancy failure - in fact folate (folic acid) antagonist Methotrexate is used for that specific reason in cases of ectopic pregnancy. Take 1-5 mg Folic Acid daily throughout your reproductive life! ...Read more

Overdose of which vitamin is dangerous vita, vitd, vitb1, folic acid?

Overdose of which vitamin is dangerous vita, vitd, vitb1, folic acid?

A & D- very rare: One can only overdose on fat soluble vitamins (a, d, e) except vit. B6 (which should be limited to 250 mg/day). But it takes huge amounts to overdose. The average adult would need to take about 2 million units of a to overdose, or 200, 000 iu/day for several months. Vit d toxicity is rare unless one takes at least 40, 000 iu/day for months. Could folate (folic acid) anemia cause delusions?

Could folate (folic acid) anemia cause delusions?

Folate (folic acid) anemia: Folate (folic acid) and B12 are closely related in their functions. If one replaces folate (folic acid) alone in a megaloblastic anemia but not B12 also, it can lead to neurological damage -- difficulty walking, along with delusional psychosis. I found a case of this, where the patient developed capgras syndrome: the delusion that a relative had been replaced by an impostor. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15029091. ...Read more

Folic Acid (Definition)
