Low Estrogen In Young Females
Premature ovarian: Failure, or a problem in the hypothalamus or pituitary that leads to decreased estrogen stimulation. In some cases, extreme exercise, particularly with weight loss such as seen in an eating disorder, can also cause this. Ingestion of anabolics can do this as well. Less commonly, a prolactin secreting pituitary tumor can do the same thing. Check w/your physician. ...Read more
Just remember:: The timing of when the labs were drawn is of critical importance in interpreting them. During the first week after menses (or during the menses or right before menses, the estrogen levels will be very low- and that is normal). Ideally, hormone levels are checked on day 21-23 of menstrual cycle. ...Read more
I am a 25 y/o female with one ovary, and low estrogen. My re won't do anything about it till I see him later this month. Help! My headaches are severe.?
Patience: Headaches can be due to hormone fluctuations. If you are undergoing infertility treatments there are special protocols that need to be followed to help with pregnancy. There are non-hormonal therapies that can be helpful and are safe in pregnancy and you may need to call your regular gynecologist or family practitioner to seek treatment while waiting on the rei dr. ...Read more
39yr old female, why is testosterone 390ng/dl sohigh? Dhea-s low under 15ug/dl, period & cortisol normal. 2 years on 0.025 estrogen patch. No hairines
Recheck promptly!: Testosterone 390 ng/dl (are you absolutely sure of units?) is extremely high for a female. Please have it checked again sooner not later; if still elevated you need prompt evaluation of the pelvis with imaging studies. With no hairiness (hirsutism) and regular periods I am suspicious the test is either in error or there's a confusion with units. ...Read more

What causes high progesterone (3x upper limit) in post-menapausal female? (also testosterone 4x upper limit). Very low estrogen. Hyst. 2007, 1 ovary
Have labs repeated.: If they remain in this range, it may be that you have some metabolic defect that is causing a build up of those hormones. Progesterone is a precursor to the other hormones, and rarely testosterone-secreting ovarian tumors can develop on the ovaries, so you need a sonogram to look for that, also, was it total or free testosterone that was that high. Total that high more conerning than free. ...Read more
Is it possible for female to ve low estrogen but normal pb TSH and FSH levels in blood? Or is FSH another name of estrogen?
Yes and no: Estradiol the most common estrogen is a hormone produced in the ovary in the cells which surround the egg. What does it mean if I am a female, have normal estrogen, testosterone & TSH, but low sex hormone binding globulin?
Nothing - u r normal: Regardless of gender, if your estrogen, testosterone & TSH are normal, then you're normal. Sex hormone binding globulin is used to bind up sex hormones, exactly what it says. Sometimes we check both total hormone as well as free hormone, since it's typically free hormone that accounts for benefit claimed by hormone. But rather than look at numbers, consider how you feel. We treat patients, not #s. ...Read more
What causes low blood level of dhea. I'm 25 female. Adrenal tumor maybe? I have high estrogen and chronic fatigue, body pain etc...
See endocrinologist: Dhea isn't a hormone we typically measure at random because it isn't as reliable as the longer 1/2 life of dheas. Likewise, we usually don't measure total estrogen as it isn't helpful. Dhea is most reliable when compared before and after IV acth during stim testing around other hormones. Adrenal insufficiency can't be identified with a random dhea. ...Read more

What is better to treat low estrogen in 30 yr old female (6 p/mg), Premarin (conjugated estrogens), estradiol or birth control?
Depends: If you have an intact uterus then I would use a birth control pill as it provides both the estrogen and progesterone you need to prevent pregnancy and endometrial hyperplasia. If you have had a hysterectomy than both premarin (conjugated estrogens) and estradiol (estrace) would be fine. The estrogen in birth control by the way is estradiol as well. Birth control also lowers ovarian cancer risk (combined pills only) ...Read more
Morning cortisol level of 40 ug/dl, TSH is 4.4. On estrace (estradiol) (2mg) for low estrogen. 31 year old female. Is cortisol level cause for concern?
Elevated Cortisol: A cortisol of 40 is high and even though exogenous estrogen is known to slightly elevate serum cortisol levels, a value of 40 needs to be evaluated. Long term corrisol elevation is injurious to your health and may signify an underlying adrenal glandular condition, such as Cushing's syndrome. You should follow up with an endocrinologist soon. ...Read more

Varies: Estrogen levels fall at menopause. This is a natural transition for all women between ages 40 and 55. The decline in estrogen can happen abruptly in younger women whose ovaries are removed.
