If you did not need Dilantin for seizures wouldn't te levels be high all the time instead of low, I had 2 seizures 14 years ago and level always 3.4?

If you did not need Dilantin for seizures wouldn't te levels be high all the time instead of low, I had 2 seizures 14 years ago and level always 3.4?

Complicated: Drugs used for seizure prevention are best used in sufficient dosages to put a patient into a therapeutic range to best protect against future seizures. Your level seems too low, but the medicine, nonetheless, is likely helping. Talk to your neurologist as to what should be done to optimize your treatment. ...Read more

No: Seizure will be caused by a neurological event, some seizure could be caused by alteration in blood chemistry, some side effect to medication.

What can cause constant migraines, mental issues now seizures. High platelets 2 yrs. Recent test platelets 565, 000, monocytes 1.0, low MCH. Next step?

Discuss with doctor: The findings you describe are consistent with "essential thrombocytosis", a condition in which the bone marrow produces too many platelets. Cause is unknown; it may be genetic. The "next step" should be a discussion with the provider who will be taking that next step with you-- along of course with parent (s) or guardian (s). ...Read more

Why do our bodies create such high fevers if they cause seizures?

What does it mean if my BP goes as high as 171/94 and pulse 103 during a seizure? Why does the body react that way?

Adrenaline: During a seizure, just like any other significantly stressful situation, the body's fight or flight senses the stress & responds by releasing stored adrenaline into the circulations. By its direct stimulation on the heart and blood vessels, the rapid surge in this hormone causes a rise in BP & pulse. Other intertwined mechanisms are described but rapid rise in sympathetic tone is the main reason. ...Read more

What is a dissociative seizure? Is this related to anxiety so high it causes a seizure?? Is memory loss assiciated with this?

Dx of exclusion: Hi David, dissociative seizures are non-epileptic and can be caused by a number of factors (extreme anxiety being one possibility); they require careful evaluation to determine etiology and treatment. Amnesia is possible, but if the seizures are truly psychogenic, the loss is not due to nervous system damage, and should respond to appropriate treatment. Hope this is helpful. Take good care. ...Read more

My wife has undiagnosed seizures when she has high anxiety. When she takes welbutrin, they seem less aggressive and less frequent. Why is that?

Wellbutrin (bupropion): Stress can trigger seizures and should be treated. Paradoxically Wellbutrin can cause seizures by lowering her seizure threshold. She would do better to try a different approach to the anxiety reaction with perhaps Lexapro or Viibryd (vilazodone hydrochloride). These are SSRIs which can also lower seizure threshold but not to the degree Wellbutrin can ...Read more

If low oxygen levels are causing seizures would the best way to treat them be finding out why oxygen is dropping?

If that is the case?: When you experience a seizure, your oxygen level might dip and your carbon dioxide will also change. Many metabolic changes accompany seizures. I suspect that oxygenation due to seizure activity, not the reverse. You do not list your current anti-seizure meds, but I presume you are taking some medication. Altering your medicines may successfully control the seizures. ...Read more

Began generic Keppra (levetiracetam) XR on Aug 8 for myoclonic seizures & having high increase in psych Sx. Could med be cause? If so, ALT options for Tx of seizures?

Seizure tretaments: Keppra (levetiracetam) can definitely cause psych-related side effects. Does low sodium contribute to seizures?

Low sodium: Low serum sodium concentrations in circulating blood sure can lead to seizures. Low serum sodium concentrations are not induced by low sodium diets. Please don't confuse these. ...Read more

I just feel low on energy and don't feel like doing nothing, I have these seizures every 3 weeks or so?

Seizures not normal: Having seizures is not a normal occurrence. Seizures are an electrical disturbance of normal brain activity which disrupts motor activity, cognition, and awareness. Recently hospitalized due to 3 seizures back to back. I've been been having the past few years and found out I am low in calcium. How serious?

Can be treated: First, why is calcium low? Is it due to medication effect, or due to metabolic issues. Need to have in normal range, as if too low can cause seizures due to this alone, but if you have epilepsy, will make it worse. How is your vitamin d level? Do you need ongoing anti-seizure drug. All of the mood modifiers seem to produce seizures in me at very low doses. How can I convince my doctor of this?

It is your choice: You must be in charge of your treatment. If you feel a treatment causes more side effect then benefit, it is your choice to stop treatment. Work with your doctor to find management you can tolerate. There are good medications that are mood modifiers and anti-epileptics. Good mood management should be possible without medication side effects. ...Read more

Is there any known correlation between high blood pressure and seizures (or high blood pressure causing seizures)? Or vice versa? Thank you!

Some connections: I don't know a correlation factor, but there are interesting relationships. Eclampsia in pregnancy is a type of seizure often brought on by high bp. A frequent consequence of high BP is stroke which often then evokes seizures. Both can occur in some types of hydrocephalus. During some seizures BP either rises or might fall. It's not clear if either is ever the cause. ...Read more
