What Causes Loss of Brain Mass?

What Causes Loss of Brain Mass?

Brain size: The human brain reaches its maximum size around age 20-22, then it slowly shrinks over time. By age 75, it may decrease in volume or mass about 30%. This is a natural phenomenon. It is not clear what the biological purpose of this is.

The mass of the brain also decreases after injuries, such as traumatic injury, stroke, MS, or illnesses, such as certain infections, brain tumors, or dementia. ...Read more

What does no mass no lesion detected on brain mir finding?

What does no mass no lesion detected on brain mir finding?

MRI doesn't explain: "No mass, no lesion detected" in a Radiology report usually means a normal brain MRI scan. I assume that the scan was ordered for a reason (i.e., symptoms). There are many symptoms (I would say MOST symptoms) that prompt an MRI scan & cannot be explained by it. MRI looks for ANATOMIC problems - tumors, bleeding, etc. The problem here is FUNCTIONAL - the nerves function incorrectly. TTYD who orderd ...Read more

How big would a tumor have to be to cause a midline shift or mass effect in the brain? Is this what rads. Look for on cts or the actual tumor?

Depends: Midline shift can be caused by a tumor or by the edema (or swelling) around it so there is no specific size that will cause midline shift. A ct scan is to look for mass effect, swelling and bleeding. ...Read more

Pat. With end stagerf and had brain mass. We can do brain MRI with enhancement?

Not as crucial: Use of gadolinium is risky if there is kidney problem, as could deteriorate sharply into full failure. In your case, sounds like failure already present which might change amount of contrast to be used, but does not have same adverse effect. Discuss with radiologist, and get an effective study. ...Read more

I m patient brain tuberculoma (mass lesion 0f 65mm after 2year it is 30mm and after 4 year again attack came may it is dangerous?

Yes: You should consult with both a neurologist and a neurosurgeon. Chances are you are going to need prophylactic seizure medications and another course of TB therapy. You may need surgery (depends on location and response to meds) Be sure to monitor seizure meds, Vit D level and folate (folic acid) while on therapy. ...Read more

What does it mean to have stress-induced seizures? And can a brain mass still be dangerous if they said its be nine?

What does it mean to have stress-induced seizures? And can a brain mass still be dangerous if they said its be nine?

Depends: Seizures are uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain. If you were told you had stress-induced seizures, they may be pseudoseizures or non-electrical seizures which are difficult to treat. Brain masses can be benign, but without knowing exactly what kind of mass and where it is I can't state whether it will ever be dangerous or not. Your doctor should be able to answer the question. ...Read more

Constantly tired, drained and weak. What could be wrong? History:endometriosis and brain mass. Ideas please?!

Sleep?: If you have poor sleep with excessive daytime sleepiness you could have a sleep disordered breathing problem. This can affect overall health including immune system, hormones, focus, concentration, memory, etc. If sleep is a problem get a sleep study done to see how you are sleeping. You may also need to see your md to get blood work up done to check for any disease processes that are going on. ...Read more

Mass in right side of brain. Can that explain why I have speech and memory problems? Doctor said the mass wasn't supposed to affect meor grow anymore

Talk to your: Parents and your doctor about your concerns. It is scary to have a mad in your brain. If you are having speech and memory problems have it checked out to allay your fears. You may want to talk to a psychologist or social worker or guidance counselor at school, too. It's hard enough to be an adolescent without fears of medical issues. It's good to have someone to confide with. ...Read more

Ct scan showed 18mm intrasellar mass in brain. What does this mean for me?

Ct scan showed 18mm intrasellar mass in brain. What does this mean for me?

Intrasellar mass: The sella turcica is where the pituitary gland is located. Most intrasellar masses are related to the pituitary gland. There are a variety of neoplastic and non-neoplastic masses. The most common tumor in adults is pituitary adenoma. Speak with your doctor about this. You've had a CT scan, but an MRI scan is far better at evaluating these. ...Read more

Would a MRI of the brain show a posterior mass in the neck since they are close in proximity? Or would an MRI of the neck specifically be needed?

Would a MRI of the brain show a posterior mass in the neck since they are close in proximity? Or would an MRI of the neck specifically be needed?

Do a proper study: If even part of a neck mass is on the head study, it should be noted in the report. If it is not mentioned, it likely wasn't covered.
MRI images are generated by choosing "pulse sequences" which are meant to evaluate certain tissue for specific findings. Neck and head technique does differ.
Find out from your provider if MR workup of the neck is warranted in the first place. ...Read more

I had an MRI after I was admitted to the ER yesterday for hyponatremia. They found a very small benign mass on the right side of my brain. Thoughts?

I had an MRI after I was admitted to the ER yesterday for hyponatremia. They found a very small benign mass on the right side of my brain. Thoughts?

Benign brain mass: If it was an incidental and "benign" brain mass I'm pretty sure it's likely a Meningioma. That's a fairly common finding on CT/MRI and they are small and extremely slow growing benign tumors. They rarely cause issues and if they do it's usually many, many years (20-30) down the line and only cause problems when they start pressing on the brain. Very rarely do they ever need to be removed. ...Read more

Doctors thought it to be a brain tumor, ADEM, and now cortical dysplasia is it still possible for the mass to be a brain tumor? Thanks!

Different: It should be obvious which one of these is which based on MRI characteristics. Sometimes a follow up study will help.

It sounds like it is not a brain tumor if the other two are possibilities. More information is needed to make a better decision. ...Read more

A mass was found in my fathers brain xray? Should automatically assume it is a brain tumor or is there something less serious it could be?

Don't assume: Most brain masses are not cancer.
There are many benign (not cancer) causes of a mass in the brain.
If your doctor said the mass has characteristics highly suggestive of cancer then you could assume it is until you have information otherwise. ...Read more

I had an MRI on brain in March of this year and when I look at the film I saw a quarter size mass what could it mean a tumor or vessel main.

Not enough info: A "mass" on MRI could be a tumor, blood vessel, normal structure, artifact, or something else. If the report doesn't mention it, you should speak to the radiologist who read the study for clarification. ...Read more

2 yrs ago found 2cm liver mass. 3 tiny lungnodules and 3tiny brain lesions. All stable since found. Drs say not related. Is this cancer? Next step?

Possibly unrelated: If a lesion of liver found especially in presence of 3 small lung lesions, dx should have been determined by needle bx of liver under sono guidance and if positive then PET/CAT to see any association of liver, lung, brain. If no change after 2 yrs bx might still be indicated because of unusual presentation, but probably benign ...Read more

Mri for my sister shows 4days old massive edema surrounding a 4cm liquid mass. Is the open brain surgery is the best thing if the tumor normal or not?

Possibly biopsy: Hard to really say without seeing the mri, but an open surgery might be best if the mass is in accessible locations. Alternatively, a biopsy or aspiration using computer guidance might be another option if the mass is in eloquent areas or very deep. Talk to your neurosurgeon. ...Read more

Mri of brain showed thinning mylin and white spots as well as grey mass...could this along with other be MS?

MRI brain: The thinning myelin and white spots are often described in the usual aging of the brain. Multiple sclerosis (MS) plaques are commonly found along the corpus callosum, periventricular white matter, cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord. A lumbar puncture with analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid will make the diagnosis of MS. See a neurologist to discuss the MRI findings in the brain. ...Read more

Bruising easily & they r lasting a while. I have a pineal mass in my brain (just an fyi). Any ideas of what could be wrong?

Easy bruising: Please see your doctor as soon as possible. Bruising can be from trauma or from taking medications that thin the blood like aspirin, nsaids (ibuprofen, etc), warfarin, heparin, vit e, fish oil and others. Some people have genetic conditions where blood doesn't coagulate (clot) well. But if easy bruising is new, you need to be examined and have some bloodwork done to determine the cause. ...Read more

Mri show unspecified white mass on right side brain, left leg numb for 6 months neogrolist said nothing to worry about see in 2 weeks?

Cyst: Without having seen the images, I can only talk in general. White areas on MRI are commonly cysts or fatty tumors. These are benign and not to worry about. Occasionally, a white area can be a cancer or infection but this is easily differentiated from a cyst or lipoma. Your doctor should be able to tell the difference from the pictures. ...Read more

Do Anorexic Patients lose Skull Mass and Brain Tissue and bones get Thinner?

They gain: Sharper appearing facial features due to loss of subcutaneous fat. Cortical bone may become less dense due to failure to lay down matrix and hydroxy appetite crystals (catabolic state leads to loss of structural proteins). Eventually brain protein is broken down to be converted to glucose (maintain energy levels that would otherwise be coming from other sources (carbohydrate, glucose, fat etc) ...Read more
