Perhaps: Real question to be discerned is why do you, at age 21 have signs of a stroke? Is it old related to a childhood issue, or newer. Do you have a hematological issue such as sickle cell, or do you have a hereditary problem with homocysteine, such as mthfr. Is there a cardiac problem such as a lingering vsd, or pfo? Need more info: In order to give you a more informed answer, i would need more information about what you mean when you say there is an abnormality in the cerebral cortex. This could benign or something serious. Treatment depends upon the etiology. ...Read more

You may want to treat with a good psychiatrist who can provide long-term treatment without resorting to benzodiazepines, though.
