Taking Benicar/HCT, and concern about FDA ROADMAP trial study that it increased risk of cardiovascular death. How safe is it and how widely used?
Still safe and used:
Benicar (olmesartan) w/ and w/out HCT sells at 8.3 million Rxs/year, and it's in the Top 40 most prescribed. (See Medscape art. #829246.)
The most recent info from the FDA was in June 2014; it reported it "found no clear evidence of increased cardiovascular risks."
The increased deaths in ROADMAP came mostly in those with the lowest BP. It may be too aggressive BP control rather than the drug is the danger. ...Read more
Benicar/hct drug info sheet shows little differences in antihypertensive effect between dosages 40/12.5=16/10 while 20/12.5 =17/8. Would 20/12.5 be ok?
Response: Your BP goal should be <140/90. If you have heart disease, diabetes or kidney disease then it should be <130/80. Please go by response and use the smallest dose required to achieve the goals. Lifestyle modification with achieving ideal body weight, increasing exercise, watching salt intake, dash diet and moderation in alcohol intake will help decrease BP and minimize medication usage. ...Read more
Can you recommend a generic for cost reduction purposes. I had been taking Diovan (valsartan) hct 300-25 mg and then most recently losartan/hctz 100-25 mg.?
Been taking benicar hct for years and went to doctor 2 weeks ago & prescribed metoprolol 12.5 mg because bp was elevated, how can I come off this?
Most hypertensive: Patients require 3 or 4 different medications to obtain sufficient BP control as they get older. If you want to normalize your blood pressure without medications you will need to lose weight (BMI of 20) exercise daily and limit the sodium content of your diet to less than 1.5 grams a day. It takes very hard work but the benefits of being off medications is worth it. Good luck. ...Read more

What is the peak time and half-life of amlodipine, pravachol, (pravastatin) and benicar/hct medicines respectively. Thanks for the help in advance.
LookOnline & Empower: Search engines, esp google, can rapidly find these answers for you (& me), e.g. Search "amlodipine t½" & go to nih, fda or edu websites. Keep in mind that chemical t½ life & physiologic t½ life may be very different, data is only a small group average & there are many variables. Also keep in mind that your primary medical decision maker (primary physician, if you will) is always you, no one else. ...Read more

Medlineplus site has warning: spironolactone has caused tumors in laboratory animals. How safe is it. Also can you use with bb bystolic (nebivolol) &benicar/hct?
Can using 0.3ml lidocaine with 1:100, 000 epinephrine during dental work interacts with bystolic, (nebivolol) benicar/hct or isosorbide mononitrate medicine.?
Probably not: Although Lidocaine is a vasodilator, there is no clinical evidence of any drug interactions or special precautions needed. However, if during the injection, some of the anesthetic were to be introduced directly into a blood vessel, the Epinephrine could cause a minor and short acting increase in heart rate. ...Read more
Hctz causes potassium loss, but I am taking smallest hctz (benicar (olmesartan) 40/ hct 12.5) but my potassium is 3.0. Ben 40 should raise potass. Any other causes?
Taking Benicar (olmesartan) 40/ hct 12.5 but my potassium is 3.0 as the diuretic is causing potassium loss. Any other meds to control htn & replace hctz diuretic?
Low potassium levels: Your low potassium (k) could be worsened by magnesium (m) loss due to hct. Your k won't be normal unless the m is repleted. At your age, with a history of cardiac disease, you may have some chronic kidney disease. Hct won't work if you've <50% of your kidney function left. If your BP isn't controlled on your meds, ask your doc to rx Furosemide (f) as a diuretic. F causes urine loss of m and k too. ...Read more
Doctor wanted to use 25mg spironolactone to counter effect potassium lose by hct in ben/hct. I wonder why not use Benicar (olmesartan) without hctz. How effective.?
A good option: Benicar (olmesartan) ; hctz work so well together that the combination tablet was formulated. Potassium levels are often sustained with this combination but some folks lose too much potassium even with this low dose of hctz. An alternative to spironolactone is potassium but it can irritate the stomach. Also spironolactone itself can help lower blood pressure. ...Read more

Had issues with Linsinopril and Norvasc currently on losartan/hct having nccp and anxiety since starting. Would Exforge hct (amlodipine and hydrochlorothiazide and valsartan) be a good next try?
Taking tekturna hct (aliskiren and hydrochlorothiazide) 150 mg + benicar+clonodine+metoprol 100mg per day. Have muscle pain in both arms. Can any of these be causing muscle pain.
Unlikely: But you & your physician may be interested in looking at other causes that would be more common starting with musculoskeletal. ...Read more

My dr prescribed 50 mg of losartan and 25 mg of hctz (hydrochlorothiazide). is this a normal combination?
Very normal: Sure is. Like peanut butter and jelly. Peas and carrots. Hugs and kisses. That combination is effective, safe, and used very commonly because the losartan helps cancel a troublesome side effect of hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) (potassium wasting) and hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) potentiates the effect of losartan. Your dr is on the ball. ...Read more
