Doctor insights on:
No: Loratadine (claritin) is an anti-histamine. These medications can cause sedation as a side effect, but i wouldn't call it a sleeping pill. If you need a sleeping pill, see your doctor so you can be better assessed as to why you need a sleeping pill. Often times sleeping pills are the wrong answer and just used to mask an underlying problem. ...Read more

See physician: A 51 year old male with allergy symptoms taking cetirizine, benadryl, and loratadine without improvement. See an allergist to determine what you are allergic to and also to determine if there is something else going on, like a sinus infection. Add a nasal steroid spray (OTC Flonase or Nasacort) twice a day as well. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I have been giving my 6 month old 1/2mg loritadine bid x 4.5 days now, and still very congested and can't sleep without choking. Keep going?
Doctor to evaluate: An infant who has "choking" symptoms needs a doctor's evaluation. Loratadine (Claritin) is an over-the-conter allergy medication and is approved for older kids, which means using it in infants may or may not have the desired effects (should be working closely with one's doctor). So, keep going... to the doctor's office, but not necessarily with the loratadine. ...Read more
I took claritin an 1.5 hours ago. Can't sleep and it didn't help. Can I take benadryl? I have severe seasonal allergies.
My dr prescribed Claritin for a skin reaction, but its no longer effective. Can I take a second dose so I can get a decent night's sleep?
Claritin: Rather than doubling the dose of Claritin it may be wiser to try a different antihistamine until you can get back in and be seen. Not knowing what the condition is it is difficult to know exactly what to do. I suspect this may be chronic hives. There are certainly other things to do if it is. You may want to see an Allergist, ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Having post nasal drip , cant sleep at night, i should i take Benadryl or claritin? When should i take it, day or night? Thanks.
Drip: If you take a Claritin and the drip stops its allergic. Take the pill between 4to 6 pm (before things bloom) for a couple of days. If there's no change and the drip is worse lying down it could be a symptom of silent acid reflux. You then could try an antacid a few hours before bedtime ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Im on claritin D and flonase, but getting little relief/sleep. Is it okay to also take either theraflu nightime sever cold and cough or nyquil coldflu?
I took 24h Claritin about 4-5 hours& it did not help at all. (I'm 18) I'm exhausted, can't breathe & can't sleep. Can I take a Benadryl tablet?
Yes: Although Claritin is somewhat slower in onset of effect, antihistamine may not be the answer. Knowing more about why you can't breath (congestion? mucus? wheezing? etc) would increase efficacy of any advice. That said, Benadryl is likely safe. Cetirizine is somewhat faster than Claritin, but longer effect compared with Benadryl. Consider Afrin for 2-3 days max (read warnings carefully) if congest ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
