Is loratadine like benadryl (diphenhydramine)?

Is loratadine like benadryl (diphenhydramine)?

Kinda mostly: Loratadine is a 'non-sedating antihistamine, ' and Diphenhydramine (/benadryl) is a sedating antihistamine (aka: older / h1 & h2 blocker), so yes, they are close cousins in intended effects--just differ in side effects. ...Read more

Is it safe to take loratadine and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) together?

Depends: They are both in the same family (antihistamines), but a few people have daytime symptoms so take non-sedating med (like loratadine) and its effect wears off before next day's dose, so take a sedating (/older) antihistamine (like benadryl) at bedtime for continued relief and to aid with sleep. If no heart / urinary / blood pressure issues and no other meds to conflict with, not likely a problem. ...Read more

Taking 120 mg pseudoephedrine every 12 hours, 10 mg loratadine in morning, and one Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at bedtime, is this ok?

Taking 120 mg pseudoephedrine every 12 hours, 10 mg loratadine in morning, and one Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at bedtime, is this ok?

Medication question: It is okay to take the pseudoephedrine with the loratadine. However, the nighttime Benadryl (diphenhydramine) would be considered a duplication of the loratadine which is a 24 hour medication. Without knowing more about your medical history, I would not suggest that you do that. Instead, I would suggest discussing the optimum management of your medications with your doctor. ...Read more

Cani take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) with loratadine?

Probably yes.: Many people report their 'daily' non-sedating antihistamine in the am does not provide relief until next am. So, if no concerns for gu/heart/bp/med-conflict issues, then they often take a 'sedating' antihistamine at night for continued symptom relief and 'bonus' of sleep aid effect. ...Read more

Can loratadine be used for a food allergy in place of benadryl (diphenhydramine)?

Can loratadine be used for a food allergy in place of benadryl (diphenhydramine)?

Maybe. . .: Benadryl is a brand of generic diphenhydramine which is a 1st generation antihistamine. Loratadine is a generic 2nd generation antihistamine. While it's best to avoid foods that cause allergies, answer to your question is a qualified maybe b/c it depends upon type of allergy and amount of exposure. If you're anaphylactic to peanuts, only epinephrine will save you, in which case you need EpiPen. ...Read more

I gave my one year old half of an ml of children's benadryl (diphenhydramine). I did not realize her dad gave her loratadine a few hours before. Will it hurt her?

Not likely.: Assuming your child is about average weight which is 10-11kg, 0.5 ml will not harm her even with the loratadine given earlier. Always be sure to communicate with other caregivers about medications, though, and keep them out of reach of toddlers. ...Read more

My doctor put me on loratadine 10mg antihistamine, one tablet every 24 Benadryl (diphenhydramine) after I've already taken loratadine for 2 days now. Is this safe?

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) - no drive: Loratadine rarely causes drowsiness unless taken with medications such as erythromycin, cimetidine or ketoconazole. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) affects our brain even if don't feel sedated. If you absolutely need to take both medications, take loratadine AM and Benadryl before you go to bed. ...Read more

What do you suggest if my doctor put me on loratadine 10mg antihistamine, one tablet every 24 Benadryl (diphenhydramine) after I've already taken loratadine for 2 days now?

Depends on Problem: If you were put on loratadine for allergies and it is not responding to the medication you can take the loratadine in the morning and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night. But, there are other allergy medicine that may help you more. I would suggest letting your doctor know you are not getting relief. Also, be careful with Benadryl (diphenhydramine) as it can be sedating and driving with it is a DUI in many states. ...Read more

What is in claritin (loratadine)? Is diphenhydramine in claritin (loratadine)?

What is in claritin (loratadine)? Is diphenhydramine in claritin (loratadine)?

Anti histaminic: Claritin (loratadine) is a prescription anti-histaminic (anti-allergic) medication which has less of a tendency to cause sleepiness as a side effect. Diphenhydramine (benadryl) is not in Claritin (loratadine) but it is an over the counter anti-histamine of slightly higher potency than claritin, (loratadine) but a much stronger tendency to cause drowsiness. ...Read more

Can I take diphenhydramine and loratadine at the same time? Thanks in advance.

Why should you?: Loratadine (Alavert, Claritin) is a mainly non-sedating antihistamine. Diphenhydramine is very sedating and affects the brain if if you don't feel sedated. In severe itching or welts, taking more that the recommended dose of antihistamines is acceptable. I would suggest you double-up on loratadine rather than adding the other and even then only if absolutely necessary. ...Read more
