Doctor insights on:
Loratadine 20 Mg Dose
Not in the USA: The full adult dose of Loratadine in other parts of the world is 20 mg. That was the most effective dose. This amount caused a 12-14% drowsiness rate. This was not acceptable for marketing in the USA. The 10 mg dose was tested against Chlorpheniramine in order to find a non-drowsy dose and it worked. So for most 10 mg is fine. Worse allergy, 20mg would help and a few will develop drowsiness.See 1 more doctor answer
It may make u Drowsy: The full adult dose of Loratadine in other parts of the world is 20 mg. This amount caused a 12-14% drowsiness rate. The 10 mg dose was tested in the us in order to find a non-drowsy dose and it worked. If your allergy symptoms are controlled with Diphenhydramine (benadryl-50% drowsiness) and not 10 mg loratadine, you can try a second 10 mg dose and it may help with a lot less drowsiness.
Mgt: I think it should not result in harmful side effects. If you do notice any changes, please report them right away to your PCP.See 1 more doctor answer
At what weight can a kid take the 10mg dose of loratadine? Bottle says "age 6" but my kids small. What weight?
Well tolerated: I wouldn't worry much about the dose level. This medication has one of the safest profiles of any of the over the counter medications. The suggested dose for 2-5 is 5mg and a dissolving tablet is available in some local. Adult studies found no increased benefit or side effects with a double dose of 20 mg. So having a smallish 6 yo take the 10 would be fine.
My husband swears Loratadine doesn't work for him unless he takes 20mg BID. What is the highest SAFE dose take?
Recommended dose: The recommended daily dose is 10 mg. It is fairly a safe medicine, but side effects may arise in high doses. It seems like he is tolerating the 40 mg/day dose. The high dose definition may vary from patient to patient according their body tolerance. As he requires a large dose, he might benefit from adding different class medicine, so that he can avoid the side effects from unconventional doses.See 1 more doctor answer

20mg loratadine + 12h later 10mg + 12h later 10mg. Can this dose inhibit basophils and/or leukotrienes? There has been some research into this (pubmed)
Slightly: Yes, but the main effect of antihistamines is focused on mast cells.See 1 more doctor answer
Why does claritin (loratadine) make me tired. I took one dose and it made me so sleepy. I'm 51 year old female.
Common side effect: Although Claritin (loratadine) may have less drowsiness than other antihistamines, nonetheless this does vary, and seems that you are going to be challenged to tolerate. Other similar products may be less soporific, so work with your doctor to find the best approach.See 1 more doctor answer
My dr prescribed Claritin (loratadine) for a skin reaction, but its no longer effective. Can I take a second dose so I can get a decent night's sleep?
Claritin (loratadine): Rather than doubling the dose of Claritin (loratadine) it may be wiser to try a different antihistamine until you can get back in and be seen. Not knowing what the condition is it is difficult to know exactly what to do. I suspect this may be chronic hives. There are certainly other things to do if it is. You may want to see an Allergist,See 1 more doctor answer
If I'm having severe allergy issues due to very high pollen levels, is it okay to take a double dose of claritin (loratadine)?
You can, but: Not recommended, unless under medical supervision, besides doubling up on antihistamines isn't the answer, allergy treatment needs to be comprehensive, unfortunately, there is no magic bullet. OTC nasal steroids and saline nasal washes can help initially besides antihistamines, in addition to environmental control/avoidance if possible, if not controlled, check aaaai. Org or acaai. My 6yo son has seasonal allergies. 10mg of 24hr Claritin (loratadine) quits working for him after approx 12hrs. Can I give him a 2nd 10mg dose?
No: Don't double up on antihistamines, and refrain from self medicating after a certain point. He needs to be evaluated by his doctor/allergist, check aaaai. Org or acaai. Org for an allergist in your area, best wishes best wishes
