Loose floating stool: Floating stool is an exception, not the norm. Stool floats in part when it contains a lot of air or gas. Diet plays a considerable role in stool composition, but additional roles here are played by your bacterial flora, the effectiveness of food digestion and absorption, GI transit time, more. Exposures? Travel? Persistently altered bowel habits deserve medical attention & evaluation please. ...Read more
For almost a month now, my stool had been loose. What could be the cause and what should I do to curb that?
Diarrhea?: You don't say whether the stool frequency has changed or whether you are having any other symptoms. Many things, including changes in diet can produce looser stools, but if it continues, see a doctor. Bring a list of all symptoms and frequency of stools with you and be prepared to provide a specimen for analysis and culture. Good luck. ...Read more
My stools are loose all the time and I go at least 3 or more times a day. Is this something I should get checked out?
I've purposely put on 20 lbs. In the process my stools are loose and I go every day, sometimes twice a day. Thanks.
Deserves evaluation: Purposeful weight gain is not associated typically with changes in your colon function. It is a good health practice to be evaluated at your age by colonoscopy, and I would suggest an evaluation with your gastroenterologist for a review of your symptoms and treatment options ...Read more
My stool is always thick heavy pasty but soft but it's still hard to pass. What can I do to get my stool to become more light and loose?
Fiber, fluids & exer: I don't know about making your stool "more light" but you can't argue against fiber, fluid & exercise to keep from being constipated. Ideally, you'd get your fiber from your foods but there are also fiber supplements available along w/stool softeners, too. Don't worry about consistency as long as you don't have to strain. Check w/your doc re need for colonoscopy (low risk vs high). ...Read more

My stool came out hard like rocks, but then turned to bright green, foul smelling, and slightly loose. What foods/conditions could be causing this?
Get a check up: The possible causes are too many and thus beyond the capacity to answer on this forum. Please consult your physician to undergo a thorough physical examination and some lab test to get the correct diagnosis. Good luck! ...Read more
Not always diarrhea: Stool texture (regardless of volume or frequency of movements) is defined by the bristol stool scale (bss), which ranges from 1 (hard, pellet stool) to 7 (loose, watery stool). Normal stool grades a 4 on the bss. On the other hand, "diarrhea" is defined by volume and stool frequency (typically more than 4-5 bowel movements/day). Tell your doctor as well about bleeding, fever, tenderness, & pain. ...Read more

Infection: Could have infection in colon and you should see a doctor before you get dehydrated. Like in the next 24-48 hours depending on how much fluid you are able to drink to keep hydrated (at least a liter a day more than you are peeing and pooping in the short-term) ...Read more
Occasionally my stools are thin... Sometimes they are wide. Sometimes they are loose. Sometimes they are liquid.?
Stools vary...: ...based on what you eat. As long as you feel well, don't see blood in the stool, and aren't losing weight unintentionally, then the consistency of your stools isn't a worry. They will change from day to day based on what and how much you eat. However, if you have persistent diarrhoea, fevers, abdominal pain, weight loss or bloody stools, you should be evaluated. ...Read more
What does it mean to have stool that looks like powder is very loose and smells bad? I've been experiencing this for months now....
Hard to visualize?: To describe your stool as looking like powder and being loose is a little confusing...looseness often suggests watery. Perhaps you mean the powder isn't sticking together! My general thought is that your stool is too dry...you are not drinking enough fluids, especially water, or stool is passing very quickly through your intestine so it doesn't absorb. Try increasing water (a lot!). Then, to Doc:) ...Read more
My 6 year old doughter has had a loose smelly stool for about a week, she goes once or twice a day at the most and has no other simptoms.
Not to worry: She may have had a little touch of a stomach virus and this can cause a mild problem with digestion of certain things in the diet for a little while. The most common things to have difficulty digesting that would cause loose smelly poop are simple sugars like sucrose, lactose and fructose. While you don't need to abstain from them altogether, limit amounts and as long as no other symptoms, relax. ...Read more
My stool often comes in 2 stages in one sitting. First stage is firm and light brown, 2nd stage is very loose and very dark brown. Is this normal?
Not unusual: The sigmoid colon acts to solidify and compact stool so what you are seeing first probably comes from that area of the colon. What is up higher may not be so firm because it has not reached the sigmoid yet so it can be somewhat looser. Unless this represents a recent change in bowel habits would not be too concerned but if it is a change would have it checked out by your doctor with rectal exam. ...Read more

Is recurrent (but only occasional) loose, bright orange stool a bad sign or normal? My diet consists mostly of grains and dairy, with few vegetables.
Stool color: Stool color and consistency can vary across a wide range of normal, and if your symptoms are only occasional, probably are nothing to worry about. If your stool ever appears bloody or black in color, you see your doctor immediately or go to the emergency room. Continue your healthy diet, since a high fiber diet tends to result in consistent stools! Good luck. ...Read more

Sometimes I have normal long size stool then some really small pieces in the same BM. Also sometimes solid stool then some loose in same BM. Is this bad?
Are you normal?: Normal bowel frequency in america fits a bell-curve distribution--once daily stooling is the middle of the curve, but the normal range extends from 3 bowel movements daily to 1 bowel movement every 3-4 days. Even variable stool frequency within the confines of this bell-curve is "normal." However, an evaluation by your gastroenterologist is in order to allay your concerns. ...Read more
For past 2 weeks whenever I stool at the end, my stools were a little loose, and I always have the feeling that I have to use bathroom, what's problem?
Question unclear: What do you mean by "loose"? Is this a change? It is seldom normal to have this happen unless something in diet or an organism or other inflammatory process is in progress. Generally these are self-limited and resolve in under 5-7 days. The daily frequency is also an issue. Be more specific in your question. Best. ...Read more
