Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (Overview)

This is a procedure done to remove a part of the cervix that is abnormal. Pts have leeps once they have had an abnormal pap smear and further evaluation warranted a leep to remove tissue off the cervix. This is both a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure. Its cuts the bad part out and it helps heal whatever other tissue is affected by hpv. Hope this helps!

Will the needle or i.V. Hurt during the loop electrosurgical excision procedure?

Will the needle or i.V. Hurt during the loop electrosurgical excision procedure?

Most of my patients do not feel that injection. If I do the leep in the operating room, those patients have an I.V. Which does require a neele stick for its placement - still only a needle stick - minimal pain. ...Read more

Should my girlfriend have a hysterectomy or leep loop electrosurgical excision procedure ?

Depends: The answer to this question really depends on her diagnosis. I assume she has some sort of problem with her pap smear. Usually cervical issues, those conditions found in a pap test, dont require hysterectomy. The leep can be both diagnostic and treat most conditions involving her cervix, but she should consult her doctor as to why either procedure should be done. ...Read more

How will I feel after the leep procedure?

Easy to recover from: A leep procedure is typically done in an office setting under local anesthesia. Placed properly, the local anesthetic makes this a completely painless procedure. There is not usually any pain even after the "numbing" medicine has worn off. None of the patients i've treated in 22 years of practice have ever required prescription strength pain medicine.
