Lifespan for a lung cancer patients?

Lifespan for a lung cancer patients?

Depends on stage: In general, the most common forms of lung cancer when caught early are highly curable with surgery or stereotactic body radiation therapy. Unfortuantely, most lung cancers are found at later stages when cure rates are very low. Patients who are at high risk for lung cancer (i.e. tobacco smokers) should get screening chest CT scans to help find the cancer at early stages. ...Read more

Cancer (Definition)

Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more

Lung liver and bone cancer life expectancy?

Unclear question: Did you mean cancer with metastatic disease to lung, liver and bone? What is the primary cancer (from which organ the initial cancer cell originated)? Either way widely metastatic disease has poor dismal prognosis with short life expectancy - so its important to figure out whats the primary as different cancer usually respond to therapy differently. ...Read more

What is the stage 4 lung cancer average survival rate?

What is the stage 4 lung cancer average survival rate?

Survival : Only god knows how long we are going to live and when we are going to die. Having said that, at least based on studies we have on average - 15 months would be the average survival rate. It could be shorter or longer than that. With better understanding about the biology of the cancer and the use of newer biological agents in the appropriate case- survival would be longer hopefully. ...Read more

Stage 4 lung cancer how long until death?

Stage 4 lung cancer how long until death?

Deep question: I am sorry to hear of your illness. This is a question best posed to the doctor who knows you and your entire case. S/he has been following you, and will be able to discuss the process with you. Even so, s/he will not be able to give you an exact time, and you may also rebound at least temporarily from what seems like worsening symptoms. Please know there is help at all stages of illness. ...Read more

Stage 4 lung cancer no chemo tumor grew & cancer spread, clinical trial only now, on oxygen for sob, blood clots in legs, what is life expectancy?

Stage 4 lung cancer no chemo tumor grew & cancer spread, clinical trial only now, on oxygen for sob, blood clots in legs, what is life expectancy?

Hard to say/depends.: At this stage of lung cancer, the options are limited as is survival. If treatment is done , it's usually chemotherapy and radiation and/or surgery after adjuvant chemotherapy. There are certainly trials out there and i would recommend talking to your doctor before starting any, but the chance for success is likely limited, as the 5 year survival of stage IV is <5%, but it doesn't hurt to try. ...Read more

Does radiation therapy for lung cancer improve survival rates?

Does radiation therapy for lung cancer improve survival rates?

Yes: It improves survival significantly in stage 1-3 lung cancers. Cyberknife provides survival similar to surgery in stage 1 patients. For stage 2-3 patients, both chemo and radiation may be used to improve survival. In certain patients with stage 4 cancer (such as with spread to the brain) radiation may help improve survival. ...Read more

Stem cell transplant for ovarian cancer--will it prolong survival rate?

Yes possible: With out knowing stage and cell type of ovarian cancer , in general high dose chemotherapy with autologous ( patients own ) stem cell transplantation is promising to prolong the life, cure is not near yet, as most of the tumors are drug resistant ( or right drug is not there ) and have residual tumor in the body. ...Read more

Chances of metastasis to lung of stage II colon cancer?

Chances of metastasis to lung of stage II colon cancer?

Low but not zero: Stage ii colon cancer means no lymph node involvement by definition, but inadequate lymph node sampling (surgical resection) may "understage" the cancer, so make sure enough ln were taken -minimum of 12! even with appropriate surgery, mets may still occur, although very unusual, so discuss with your treating docs. A pet/ct may give some reassurance so ask if this can be done. ...Read more

How likely is surviving lung cancer?

Stage dependent: Odds of surviving lung cancer depend upon the stage (extent/spread) of the cancer at the time of diagnosis. A small tumor that is confined to the lung and has not spread to lymph nodes (stage 1) may be completely cured. An advanced tumor that is large and has spread to lymph nodes and other organs (such as brain/liver/adrenal glands) will be treated but will be challenging to completely cure. ...Read more

How likely is surviving lung cancer?

How likely is surviving lung cancer?

Depends on stage...: The best predictor of surviving lung cancer is the stage or extent of the disease at diagnosis. If the cancer is small and has not spread out of the lungs, then much better odds of survival. If the cancer is large and has spread to lymph nodes and other organs (like liver, adrenals, or brain), then long term survival is less likely. ...Read more

Lung (Definition)

Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs from the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more
