FLUIDS&FIBER: Drink plenty of fluids but avoid coffee, tea, and soda. They are dehydrating. Eat plenty of high fiber food such as fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts. Eat prunes everyday. If you continue to have a problem, add a fiber product like BeneFiber or Metamucil. We like to hold off on laxatives as a last resort but if you continue to struggle with constipation use Miralax (polyethylene glycol). ...Read more

My son is 16 months old, when he cries, he holds his breath for a long time, and his face turns to blue. Why do you think is that?
Breath-holding spell: Cyanotic breath-holding spells are usually precipitated by anger or frustration or a a painful experience. The child cries and has forced expiration sometimes leading to cyanosis (blue in color), loss of muscle tone, and sometimes loss of consciousness. No: Chewing gum will not cause or lead to bad breath. However, I would not chew gum for that purpose. Proper oral hygiene with tooth brushing, flossing and the use of a tongue scraper will keep your mouth clean and healthy. Routine dental check-ups and cleanings are also essential to maintain healthy teeth and gums. If you have persistent bad breath, you need to see a dentist for an evaluation. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
COPD: If you smoke, particles of partially burned paper and tobacco leaves (tars) & carbon monoxide build up in your lungs. Over time, the breathing tubes & the alveolae thicken and fill with gooey fluid, decreasing the efficiency of gas exchange. So one becomes short of breath with minor activities since there's not much oxygen available to the blood. The best time to stop smoking is now. ...Read more

Yes: You may have seen this in the movies. It offers no health benefits. It's very dangerous unless you have somebody to pull your face out if you lose consciousness. We pathologists call it "shallow water blackout." in fact, the hero of the movie that popularized it, jay moriarty, probably died in real life from an overlong free dive. I love the water and urge you to be safe at all times. ...Read more
I can run for a long time sometimes but its hard to catch my breath Sometimes when I'm doing nothing I got to breathe hard to get the air in my lungs.
Sounds odd...: Odd symptoms are best approached by making a symptom diary. That means recording one's daily activities and noting when symptoms happen (such as between miles 5 and 6 on an 8-mile run), what makes symptoms better, what makes them worse, what related symptoms happen (such as a fast heart rate at the same time as breathing issues). One can see his primary doctor, and bring the diary. ...Read more
