Long Term Use Of Dexilant
Can you be on Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) for long term, like over a year? If so do you have to watch anything?
Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) long term: Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) - the active isomer of Prevacid is approved for treatment up to 8 weeks. Long term use - over a year has been associated with bone fractures and osteoporosis. Electrolyte abnormalities (low magnesium) have also been reported. I would caution long term use and if needed take the lowest dose and consider having a GI evaluation if symptoms persist. ...Read more
Which is more effective Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) or omeprazole? Which is safer? Is atrophic gastritis risk with these high with long term use?
They are equivalent.: Both of these work equally well. However, some patients respond well to one and not the other, and sometimes trial and error is the only method to determine which medication is best for a particular patient. The risk of atrophic gastritis, although small, would be essentially equal for each of the medications. I would recommend returning to your gastroenterologist to discuss this. Good luck. ...Read more

These two medications inhibit the release of acid in your stomach. The acid does have an important role in digestion. The ppi meds (dexilant) have an adverse effect on calcium absorbtion in the body and therefore can contribute to the development of osteoporosis.
You need to work with your doctor to find out why you are having and what you can do to decrease the gastritis. ...Read more
Does Dexilant effect methotrexate, if so how. Took 60mg daily of Dexilant for five days and took my. 8cc of methotrexate. Have been feeling nauseous and generally ill for a few days. How long before Dexilant is out of system?
Can increase MTX, but: Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor, which can decrease the ability of your kidneys to remove mtx from your body. However, I doubt your levels could have risen dramatically in five days, when you have had only one mtx dose. Besides, mtx itself takes 2 & 1/2 mo to fully form the most active metabolites, called Methotrexate polyglutamates. I would not take the ppi long term without readjusting mtx! ...Read more

UGI peptic Rx: You have options. OTC omeprazole can suffice. It is a step down in potency yet effective. I recommend that as a first step. Also, try to remedy why the ulcer occurred - eat small bites, chew well, have modest meals, do not overeat spice, avoid alcohol, aim for ideal wt and BMI, don't eat much after 8 pm. Then you can transition to ranitidine twice daily - also OTC. Is less potent. ...Read more

PPI Choices: Nexium, dexilant, (dexlansoprazole) protonix, prilosec, Omeprazole are all in the family called proton pump inhibitors or ppis. In theory, all of these drugs should work equally well and most hospitals stock only one and interchange them.
