Son used spray paint in art class yesterday w/out a mask. Is concerned about risk of long term health problems. Any info you can provide to reassure?
Unlikely a problem: The VOC's (volatile organic compounds) released by a single can or so of spray paint in a well ventilated room is unlikely to produce any significant harm. Kids who "huf" or spray the contents in a bag and inhale the smell to get high are doing so at high VOC concentrations that are trapped in the process. These kids will kill brain cells. ...Read more
Increased congestion: Many of the Zicam nasal sprays contain nasal decongestants, similar to the afrin brand of nasal sprays. Topical nasal decongestant sprays are safe if used for a short period of time. If used for more than a few days, however, they can cause rebound congestion, which can become more severe than the original reason for using the spray. Never use for more than 3 days straight. ...Read more

If I had a urethral meatoplasty as a child as a result of my circumcision, is one of the long term side effects spraying of the urine stream?
? size meatal opening: Spraying of urinary stream is common with large urethral opening if urethral meatoplasty was too "generous". Other cause of spraying stream can be a web or a band across the meatus causing 2 or more urinary streams. Recurrence of metal stenosis (Very small opening) causes a high pressure, narrow stream rather than a spraying stream. Spray can occur if there is urethral narrowing proximal to meatus ...Read more

Is it safe to use carrageenan/kappa- carrageenan nasal spray daily for long term? Are these sprays like decongestant nasal sprays?
Umm: It sounds like something containing a vegetable gum. If my hunch is correct then it is likely intended to keep your nose moist and not decongested. There are otc nasal decongestants which must not be used regularly beyond 5 days. However nasal antihistamine has been shown to have a nearly immediate decongestant effect and nasal steroid after a few days of continuous use. ...Read more

Do inhaled corticosteroids & nose sprays have the dangers like LONG TERM oral corticosteroids? I have asthma & allergies. I worry about future health
Depends on dose: For most but not all inhaled steroid preparations, if the total daily dose exceeds 1000 micrograms, it may be equivalent to taking 5 mg of prednisone daily. However even then the side effects are not usually clinically significant for most people. I usually try to keep my patients' total dose below the 1000 mcg per day but even at a higher dose, the risk/benefit ratio favors inhaled steroid. ...Read more

Lots of Options: OTC non-sedating antihistamines like Allegra, Claritin, (loratadine) or Zyrtec are helpful for perennial allergic rhinitis symptoms, however the gold-standard treatment are daily intranasal steroid sprays if your symptoms are more severe. What are the long-term effects of atrovent nasal spray? I have used for 10 yrs. This past yr, I have experienced reduced urine flow. Is it related?
Possible: Atrovent (ipratropium) (ipratroprium) has been available for quite a long while. It has a low side effect profile. Although I can't say for sure it very unlikely that after 10 years you will begin to have any secondary effects. Like any anti-cholinergic medicine it can cause urinary retention. This is much more common in men, especially if they have protate hyper trophy. There are other meds you can switch. ...Read more

Not really: But you need to keep the follow up with your doctor, both drugs aren't known for the side effects you noted, Singular may cause liver problems, but not related to long term use rather due to a reaction by some patients even after few doses, rare. If you have chronic allergies, you need an allergist evaluation with regular follow up as you may need different approach, check aaaai. Org for an allergist ...Read more
