What are the long term effects of taking temazepam?

What are the long term effects of taking temazepam?

Not much to report: Am a psychiatrist and am also a boarded sleep medicine specialist. I have been in my current practice for 21 years. I worry more about ambien, (zolpidem) because of the number of people I have seen develop amnesia on it. I have never seen anyone develop amnesia on temazepam, even at 60 mg doses. 20% of my psych patients have sleep apnea, so I am vigilant about sleeping issues in my practice. I don't think that anyone is comfortable having people on long-term benzodiazepines. However, many people simply need long-term benzodiazepine management. You do have a lot of years ahead of you. Since we really don't know the long-term liability of benzodiazepine use on the memory, it is always best whenever possible to convert to something that might be less of concern. Trazodone comes to mind as a potentially good option. Seroquel is a good sleep drug but it carries more liability long-term then temazepam. Discuss other options with your psychiatrist please.

Temazepam (Definition)

Temazepam (restoril) -- a benzodiazepine -- is a sedative/hypnotic used for the short-term (7-10 days) treatment of insomnia. It helps you fall asleep faster, decreases the # of times you awaken during the night, & gives you longer periods of uninterrupted sleep. It produces a calming effect. Take 30 min before bedtime. To avoid temporary memory loss, be sure to get 7-8 hrs ...Read more

No 600 mg.: Temazepam is a sleeping pill of the benzodiazepine family and thus can be psychologically addicting. They come in 15 and 30 mg. You can take up to 45 mg. It is not good to take on a long term basis because eventually, even the maximum dose does not help. The brand name is restopril.

What are long term effects of 600mg temazepam? Does it cause brain damage or memory loss?

Does not: The usual dose of temazepam is 15-30 mg at the bedtime for insomnia. It will cause amnesia in some people but unlikely to cause any brain or any kind of permanent damage.

Depends: It probably would be best to observe you in the hospital at least overnight. It belongs to a family of drugs that can affect your cognition and cause slowness in functioning.

Can Lunesta and, or, Restoril be taken long term? Which has fewer side effects? Are Lunesta and, or Restoril apt to help you be able to sleep longer

Can Lunesta and, or, Restoril be taken long term? Which has fewer side effects? Are Lunesta and, or Restoril apt to help you be able to sleep longer

For short-term use: Both of these drugs are prescribed to treat insomnia, and both warn to take at lowest dose for shortest time needed. Long-term use increases risk of dependency and raising dosages increases risk of side effects. Both warn that you must taper dose to discontinue after long term use, or risk serious side effects. Consider CBT psychotherapy for insomnia, more effective than relying on a pill!

His preference: It is neither right nor wrong, but his preference. This medication can be habit forming and addicting, so some doctors prefer to have their patients take a drug holiday, and then they feel more comfortable prescribing it long term.

Please tell me how long it takes for to get addicted to temazepam?

Please tell me how long it takes for to get addicted to temazepam?

As little as 1-2 wks: Can happen actually quite quickly. If using daily, as little as 1-2 weeks can make you become dependent on the medication. If used less frequently may take 1-2 months.

Currently on 60mg temazepam and it takes so long to work. Ambien (zolpidem) no longer works for me. Any suggestions on what could?

Go see ur family doc: Temazepam 60mg is way too much (30mg is max - see http://www. Drugs. Com/dosage/temazepam. Html). Ambien (zolpidem) dose for women cut in half earlier this year b/c stays in system too long. Study published earlier this wk (http://www. Bmj. Com/content/349/bmj. G5205) linked benzodiazepine use to Alzheimer's disease. Do some research on sleep hygiene. Find other options for sleep. Meditation? Exercise?

Not clear: Your friend is lucky that she made it to a hospital. They may be able to give her a medicine that reverses temazepam, and helps her wake up. But most overdoses involve more than one pill or alcohol, and that complicates things. You can hope that she has no lasting injury, but it isn't clear. And insist that she get treatment for psychological problem. IF you believe in prayer, then by all means.

400 mg temazepam od, 2 hours later patient presents to er, appreciate details of clinical procedures done 4 treatment? 4 how long patient stays in er

Suicide attempt: This sounds serious. In addition to physical support and recovery, the reason for the suicide attempt needs to be determined. Then the likelihood of the suicide attempt to happen again needs to be evaluated. If needed, the er doctors will call a psychiatrist in consult and the patient can be moved to a psychiatric unit for further observation, treatment, contact the family.

Duefor flexi-sig, 20mg temazepam did nothing last time, doc will prescribe diazepam she said. What dose and how long before should I take? Extreme anxiety

Duefor flexi-sig, 20mg temazepam did nothing last time, doc will prescribe diazepam she said. What dose and how long before should I take? Extreme anxiety

Its up to your doc: Without knowing more about you it would be irresponsible and frankly not possible to determine an appropriate dose for a procedure. In people for whom typical doses aren't adequate we will often bring in an anesthesiologist to control the level of sedation. We don't want to stop your breathing which happens occasionally even with small doses. Pre procedure 5-10mg of diazepam is typical.

Difficult to say: That is a very complex regimen for sleep and I am glad you are not taking any of these since you are pregnant. Restoring is the most likely of these to cause rebound insomnia, but it depends on how often you were taking each of them. Pregnancy itself can also affect sleep due to hormonal changes
