Vaginal estrogen: Vaginal Estradiol takes at least a couple of weeks to change weak vaginal tissue back to a heathy resiliant vagina. I took two Depo-Provera shots and now she just start me on Premarin (conjugated estrogens) pills how long does it take to work?
Hmmm: That's a lot of hormones. I'm guessing you have very heavy vaginal bleeding. Hopefully it will start working in a week or two. If not, i would consider getting a mirena (levonorgestrel). It is an iud with Progesterone that helps make bleeding lighter. If that doesn't work you may need surgery (ablation or hysterectomy). Consider the iud! good luck. ...Read more
Should a 80 yr old woman still be on 1.25 of premarin (conjugated estrogens)?!?!? She refuses to wean off of it even over a long period of time!
Probably OK: That dose of Premarin (conjugated estrogens) is equivalent to about 1% of what the normal ovaries produce each day before a women goes through menopause. It is a very lo dose and many studies show that it can be beneficial by decreasing the risk for stroke, heart attack, colon cancer, alzheimer's disease, and osteoporosis as well as decreasing hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, vaginal dryness, and pelvic relaxation. ...Read more
Weight gain etc: Most of my patients on Premarin (conjugated estrogens) do quite well as the benefits of taking it far out weigh the risks. Weight gain, bloating, breast , uterus cancer, blood clot , ht attack, stoke. These are all very uncommon in a healthy person taking this medication. If you have a uterus you will need to take Progesterone also but if you don't then u can just take estrogen which is safer. ...Read more
