It is not known if the sleep medications cause increased risk or if people who are at increased risk are just the people who tend to use these medications. Nothing lasting.: Nothing really. Most people say that even after a week , it fails to put them to sleep. When you discontinue, there maybe a rebound insomnia. Some people who take it actually experience a somnambulistic effect and can do things, eat in bed, drive, cook and do not remember they did it. Not known: The percentage is not known. I see a lot of individuals claiming Ambien (zolpidem) withdrawal on the internet, but I have prescribed Ambien (zolpidem) since it came on the market and have had people on it for years and have yet to see anything beyond mild rebound insomnia but never withdrawal.
