Long Qt Syndrome (Overview)

Romano-ward, without congenital deafness and jervell-lange-nielsen, with deafness. Both refer to a delay in the repolarization time of the cardiac cycle, when there is a "vulnerable" period. The time between the q wave and the t wave. A premature beat, which are common, in this period can cause deadly arrhythmias, like torsades de pointes. Tdp occurs when heart rate increases, consult cardiolog.

What is long qt syndrome?

What is long qt syndrome?

Heart rhythm problem: Long qt syndrome (lqts) is a congenital disorder of the heart's electrical activity that is characterized by prolongation of the qt interval (delayed repolarization) on an electrocardiogram. Delayed repolarization of the heart following a heartbeat increases the risk for sudden, uncontrollable, dangerous heart rhythm disturbances in response to exercise or stress. ...Read more

I have long qt syndrome & an etopic beat, i get a lot of chest pain & pressure in my chest. Is this a bad sign? My gp won't refer me to cardiologist.

Cardiologist: Long qt syndrome is a risk factor for arrhythmias, and if you are also experiencing chest pain/pressure you do need to see a cardiologist. You need an ecg, echocardiogram, blood tests for electrolytes and thyroid function, and a holter monitor to start the work-up. Further testing such as electrophysiologic study (eps) would be at the discretion of the cardiologist. ...Read more

If i get an ECG test for long qt syndrome will i know the result the same day?

If i get an ECG test for long qt syndrome will i know the result the same day?

Possibly: The ECG machine will automatically interpret the QT interval, but can be mislead. If there's any doubt, you may have to wait a day or two for the official interpretation by a cardiologist or heart rhythm (EP) doctor. Finally, the test must be taken in context with history & other tests, so reassurance may not occur until further discussion with your doctor. Call 911 if passing out spells. ...Read more

When you have long qt syndrome diagnosed, do you always have to start medican for it?

When you have long qt syndrome diagnosed, do you always have to start medican for it?

Talk to cardiologist: This is an area that is constantly evolving. The answer to this is complex, an requires an informed discussion with your cardiologist and possibly even an electrophysiologist. A short answer would do a disservice to the complexity that is involved here. Most patients with long qt syndrome receive medication and some require an internal defibrillator. ...Read more

Do antibiotics and heart meds cause long qt syndrome?

Do antibiotics and heart meds cause long qt syndrome?

Secondary Long QT: Both can. Several antibiotics and antiarrhythmic medications, and other medications, can prolong the qt interval on the ECG increasing the risk for certain, potetially life threatening, heart rhythms. Secondary long qt (from meds) can be made worse when taking certain heart medications (antiarrhythmics) and then adding antibiotics to the mix. Ask md if new medications are ok to add. ...Read more
