Liver (Definition)

This organ plays a major role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. It lies below the diaphragm in the abdominal-pelvic region of the abdomen. It produces bile, an alkaline compound which aids in digestion via the emulsification of ...Read more

Need more info: Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) or radioembolization, has proven to be effective in terms of extending time to progression of disease and providing survival benefit in treatment of liver colorectal metastases. Please tell me, could a 6mm cyst on liver nodule be a carcinoid?

Cysts are not carcin: A cyst is different from a nodule. The size of 6 mm is too small to call it a carcinoid. Carcinoids will produce nodules on the liver which are solid as opposed to cysts which are fluid filled structures. ...Read more

7 months ago 2.4x1.6cm mass was found on liver. They think its focal nodular hyperplasia. Today had rescan, it's 2.4x1.8cm. Still, FNH or worse??

Hasn't changed: The 2 mm difference is within the variability in measurement for today's imaging. The thing is almost certainly not growing. As a pathologist, I'm very familiar with FNH and its mimics. It's a non-problem. If it were serious, it would have grown. Forget about it and be thankful for good health. ...Read more

Can focal nodular hyperplasia (benign liver tumor) cause pain in the right side under the rib?

Yes: If it is large enough and located in a site that would ordinary produce the pain. It can stretch the liver capsule which is quite sensitive. Gallstone disease is a more common cause of pain here and you'll probably want this ruled out; it tends to be colicky and less related to position. ...Read more

2nd opinion: Marilyn, your situation is too complex to answer in 400 characters or fewer. I would recommend a second opinion from an oncologist in England at a referral center. Also, if you'd like, you can get a consult from an oncologist on HealthTap Concierge. You can go to this link to find an oncologist here in the US who can do an online consult for you. Good luck. https://www.healthtap.com/experts ...Read more

Can't tell: Where's the primary? Depending on what else is going on, death can occur in a few days (if there's a large lung cancer and it blocks an airway, causing pneumonia) to not-for-many-years if this is one of those lung cancers that response to today's chemotherapy, or there's a new molecular-biology breakthrough. What are focal fibrosis and focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver and why would they both be in my biopsy? And could they have not gone deep enough?

Was biopsy directed?: Liver biopsies are performed for a variety of reasons--pre-treatment, post-transplant, assess progression of disease, evaluate known or suspected lesions. Liver fibrosis is scarring. In what context was the liver biopsy required & what's your diagnosis? Are you consuming alcohol, taking birth control, have known liver pathology or hepatitis, what are your underlying co-morbidities? ...Read more

Results also mentioned about more than 1 nodule. Also, fatty infiltration & hemangioma. Does this mean i have fatty liver (disease? ) do i have to be on a special diet?

See note: Not sure about the nodule without seeing the actual report. Fatty infiltration and fatty liver are usually the same; however, in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) we typically see elevated liver enzymes, cholesterol, insulin resistance, and other changes. No need for a special diet but if you're overweight/obese, the best thing to do is to eat healthy, lose weight and exercise regularly. ...Read more

Hyperchoic nodular area in the liver anterior to the main portal vein measuring up to 1.4 cm. What?

Radiologist's opinio: There are some fleshy benign conditions like hamangiomas, lipomas, cysts in the liver-congenital, cysts related to dog tape worms -hydatid cysts. Some are hyperechoic and some are hypo. If it is a single nodule, cirrhosis (scarring) is less likely as multiple nodules like this occur most of the times. Do you have alcohol use, drug induced liver damage. Radiologist's opinion first, then get your dr's. ...Read more

Actually it can: Fnh is actually a curious event that begins with something we don't understand in the central blood vessel of the lesion, no matter how big or small. I'd not be surprised. If the radiologist is confident, then I'd urge you to go about your life and not worry about kidney cancer having recurred here. ...Read more
