Hepatitis Panels: Liver function tests are not really used to diagnose viral hepatitis, but elevated ast, alt, ggt, alkaline phos, bili can indicate "something" is wrong and needs evaluation::. Hepatitis panels for anti-bodies, core anti-bodies, and antigens for each of the different types of hepatitis (a, b, c, etc.) are used to indicate whether viral hepatitis is present and the severity/length of the infection. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
This organ plays a major role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. Yes: Liver function tests are often elevated in autoimmune hepatitis. This is a non- specific test. If the liver function tests are elevated additional diagnostic tests will be necessary. The anti smooth muscle antibody is one of the most important in pointing to this diagnosis. Tests for other liver diseases such as hepatitis and primary biliary cirrhosis are usually part of the evaluation. ...Read more

my blood test showed abnormal liver enzymes and elevated pancreatic enzymes. Hepatitis negative. I don't drink alcohol. Ultrasound and CT negative. ?
Other causes: Amylase, Lipase and liver enzymes can be elevate, due many other reasons such as acute cholecystitis, biliary sludge, chronic pancreatitis or even drug induced. Imaging does not necessarily pick up small gallstones or biliary sludge. Also, clinical symptoms need to be correlated with your lab work to narrow down the diagnosis. Are you having jaundice, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramps, etc? ...Read more
Elevated liver enzyme with normal other liver function and normal ultrasound and negative hepatitis b and c virus ??
2 thoughts:: A common cause of asymptomatic elevations in liver enzymes is fatty liver(Non alcoholic fatty liver disease: NAFLD). This is very common in obesity and is considered to be part of the metabolic syndrome. Ultrasound will be "normal" (i.e. falsely negative) in 17% of patients with NAFLD. A less common cause=choledocholithiasis(stones in common bile duct). Often missed on ultrasound. Can be asymptom ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Two enzymes: If they're high in the blood, they've often leaked from injured liver cells. They're not dangerous by themselves, but they mean the cause needs to be found. Alcohol, meds, hepatitis, hemochromatosis and wilson's will be ruled in / out, but perhaps the most common cause in the us today is simply lack of exercise. ...Read more
Can digestive disorders cause elevated alt/ast enzymes, liver is clean according to scan but elevated liver function dizziness & nausea persist 4months?
Blood tests are: Just that, tests. Scan is an image, a picture. You didn't say how elevated your liver enzyme tests are, but if they are really high and stay there or get worse, it means that your liver cells are not working well, even though your liver's image is good. Ask your doctor who ordered the tests why you still have nausea after 4 months. Could be hepatitis. ...Read more

Best serum tests for liver damage (fibrosis/cirr.)? Ggt, apo a1, a2 alpha gammaglobulin, ldh, haptoglobin? Others? How to interpret? Caff breath test?
Need more tests: Serum tests may never become abnormal from fibrotic or cirrhosis until late. Ultrasound abdomen is good. Ct may help. Liver biopsy is best. Usually clinical history helps. Nonalcoholic fatty liver is emerging as a new and potentially big problem and is mostly diagnosed incidentally on ct or ultrasound of abdomen. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

The liver is "life". The liver not only creates essential proteins and energy resources, but it also "detoxifies" the body through creation of elements like bilirubin while additionally breaking down a vast variety of chemicals (medications, toxins, etc.). The medical industry tests the "function" of the liver via a "liver function panel". This test looks at liver ...Read more
