Liver (Definition)

This organ plays a major role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. It lies below the diaphragm in the abdominal-pelvic region of the abdomen. It produces bile, an alkaline compound which aids in digestion via the emulsification of ...Read more

Test result for Alk Phosphatase below standard range. Others (total bilirubin, bun, albumin, total protein) also low. What could this mean? Next step?

See your clinician: There may be nothing "wrong" with you. Note that no test is perfectly accurate. Also, if you're at very low risk for a disease, an abnormal result is less likely to be true. You need to sit down with a clinician to review your tests in light of your overall personal & family medical history, physical findings, & health goals. Next steps include further tests, & watch & wait. Hope that helps. ...Read more

Alkaline phosphatase: it is difficult to interpret labs without knowing the medical setting under which they were drawn. Having said that, there are many things besides liver issues that can cause a slight increase of alkaline phosphatase. I would recommend talking to your doctor about this, and perhaps having a repeat blood draw in 1 to 2 months. Good luck. ...Read more

My friend has a total bilirubin count of 9 from a blood liver function test. Is it too high? Is there any risk on life? What should be done?

My friend has a total bilirubin count of 9 from a blood liver function test. Is it too high? Is there any risk on life? What should be done?

High!: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, bilirubin level of 9 is high and she should seek care from a doctor, immediately, to determine the cause and address it accordingly. ...Read more

A recent liver function test puts SGPT/ALT at 33, Alkaline Phosphate at 142, Albumin at 3.1. Are they indication of any problem?

A recent liver function test puts SGPT/ALT at 33, Alkaline Phosphate at 142, Albumin at 3.1. Are they indication of any problem?

May be: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your liver enzymes are not bad, but your albumin is low and suggests inadequate intake of protein. You should consider increasing your protein intake by eating meat. If you are a vegetarian, take more lentils, beans and tofu. ...Read more

What could low ceruloplasmin in the event of normal liver function test results mean? normal bili/albumin/inr/alt/ast/ggt but low ceruloplasmin

What could low ceruloplasmin in the event of normal liver function test results mean? normal bili/albumin/inr/alt/ast/ggt but low ceruloplasmin

How low?: Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthy folks have any given value out of range at one end or the other. Without elevated ALT/AST, Wilson's is unlikely. Some folks genetically run a low ceruloplasmin and it means nothing. ...Read more

Total Bilirubin (Definition)

Bilirubin, a product of hemoglobin breakdown, is present in two forms in the human body: unconjugated (indirect bilirubin, insoluble) and conjugated (direct bilirubin, soluble). Unconjugated bilirubin is conjugated in the liver and released into the small intestine in bile, the fluid in the gallbladder. Total bilirubin measures indirect bilirubin plus direct bilirubin; part of ...Read more
