What would the life expectancy of a patient with alcoholic liver cirrhosis be?

Depends: People with cirrhosis can live many years, but once they start developing complication of ascites (fluid build up in belly), confusion (hepatic encephalopathy), varices (vomiting blood) or liver cancer, the life expectancy is much less. The way to increase your life expectancy is to have a liver doctor help manage the above, and to stop drinking alcohol as you can possibly heal your liver. ...Read more

Age 58, non-alcoholic. Have liver cirrhosis due to Portal Hypertensive. Still have 40% liver working. It can be stable always or what is life expectancy?

Take care ofyourself: If you already have portal hypertension as a complication of your liver disease, you probably have had cirrhosis for awhile. There is no "40% working" - best markers are those of synthetic function. Get the underlying cause treated if possible (? HCV), stay as healthy as you can. But no, unlikely to remain 'stable always'. ...Read more

Difficult to say: With the approval of the latest round of hep C medicines, hep C has become a potentially treatable illness, sometimes even in the face of known cirrhosis. Can you tell me about life of patients with ascites and liver cirrhosis of grade iv?

Can you tell me about life of patients with ascites and liver cirrhosis of grade iv?

Complicated: Patients with liver cirrhosis develop many complications since the presence of ascites means that there is portal hyperteinsion in the venous system draining the bowel with nutrients heading to the liver. Such patients can go into liver failure and coma or develop complications from portal hypertension such as esophageal varices. A shunt has to be performed to lessen or eliminate the problem. ...Read more
