These results: Are close to normal in my experience but you do not mention the lab's normal range. The most common cause for slightly higher bilirubin levels in patients with no symptoms is Gilbert's syndrome. (a "variant" of normal. ..google it)

Hope this helps

Liver (Definition)

This organ plays a major role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. It lies below the diaphragm in the abdominal-pelvic region of the abdomen. It produces bile, an alkaline compound which aids in digestion via the emulsification of ...Read more

Is AFP included on a complete metabolic panel? Or is a separate blood test? Is AFP elevated for liver cancer only or any type of liver mass?

Is AFP included on a complete metabolic panel? Or is a separate blood test? Is AFP elevated for liver cancer only or any type of liver mass?

AFP not on CMP: Hi. No, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is not on a comprehencive metabolic panel (CMP). AFP can be run on same tube if sample size is adequate, but it is a completely separate test. AFP elevation is NOT specific for liver cancer, and can be seen in other liver diseases and other cancers. Good luck! ...Read more

I did an early detection test for AFP, since my grandfather-breast and father-liver have cancer. Do I need to investigate further. If yes, what tests?

Annual check up is a: A health check once every yearly is advised for middle aged people as you get into older years. A good doctor can check all systmes and detect cancer by means of different tests for early detection of common cancers. Blood test/s chosen by yourself is not enough. Moreover AFP is not reliable unless you have obvious cancer. Cancer screening tests for your age include check of your Colon and Prostat ...Read more

Lose weight: Fat infiltration in the liver may explain the findings. You should try to lose weight, easier said than done.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
Practice safe sex.

Need to examine: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, if bilirubin is only abnormal result, you may watch and wait. If you have no symptoms. Do not use Tylenol (acetaminophen) and related meds, no alcohol and you may repeat it in a year or so.

Consultation: It sounds like you have a complex set of issues and have already had some evaluation. For personal attention to a medical concern, consider a second opinion consult with a doctor on HealthTap. The "inbox consult" allows you to message back and forth like email, and is good when a lot of information needs to be exchanged (like prior test reports, etc.). ...Read more

Ct scan showed 1cm cyst on liver. Gi ordered ultrasound in 6mnth. Do I need 2nd opinion to be sure just a cyst? Gi also said AFP but no reason why.

Depends: A benign liver cyst can be very straight forward to diagnose on a ct, if it is water density on ct measurement, uncomplicated with no internal septations and no enhancement. If so, the workup can stop there. If it not so clear cut, it should be correlated with us. It depends on the radiologists report.
Afp is a blood test that can indicate certain types of cancers. Why ordered depends on your hx. ...Read more

I'm asian, 29, f, just diagnosed w/ chronic hep b. Hbeag -, anti-hbe +, normal lfts, viral load 1380 iu/ml. Afp 2.5 should I worry about liver cancer?

Yes slight risk: Best prevention of liver cancer is vaccination. Once infected most of the time virus will clear active disease will need treatment with Alpha interferon, Lamivudine etc to clear virus and prevent further damage & monitoring progression. Damage control includes weight diet, avoiding drugs, alcohol smoking, diabetes (blood sugar) oral contraceptives additional infections like hiv. ...Read more

Mom age 60 ct: large lobulated mixed hypodense masses of 15x10 cm in toto in right lobe of liver afp alpha-fetoprotein = 4.46 iu/ml is cancer or not?

Mom and liver spot: Unfortunately, nothing on a ct, regardless of lab studies like AFP gives a definitive diagnosis. An elevated AFP blood test is seen in about 60% of liver cancer patients. So 40% of patients with liver cancer may have normal AFP levels (less than 10) which do not exclude cancer. The major issue is the mass which must be biopsied to get a diagnosis, after which a plan can be made. ...Read more

Mom 60. Abdomen CT shows has hypo dens liver masses no hbs afp 4.46 echinococesus <1:16 ca-125 >5000 is its ovarian cancer or not & on which stage

It is likely a cance: A high ca 125 leads us to look for ovarian cancer as the most likely cause (sometimes it is due to primary perotoneal cancinoma or fallopean tube tumor). The ct scan may show some intraperitoneal disease or pelvic disease including ovarian massess. But she needs a biopsy proof of cancer and then will likely require treatment for ovarian cancer which often includes debulking surgery and chemotherapy. ...Read more

Mom 60. Abdomen CT shows has hypo dens liver masses no hbs afp 4.46 echinococesus <1:16 ca-125 >5000 is its ovarian cancer or not & on which stage?

Stage IV ovarian ca: Unfortunately, it is likely that she has stage IV ovarian cancer with spread to the liver. Nothing else would give a ca125 of 5000. She should be on biopsied for a diagnosis and be on systemic chemotherapy which can be very helpful in selected cases. ...Read more

Common causes to order a tumor marker AFP test?

Liver and testicular: An alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a blood test that checks the level of AFP in a pregnant woman's blood. It is a substance made in the liver of the fetus. The level of AFP in the blood of a pregnant woman can help see whether the baby may have chromosomal abnormalities. The test is also used as a tumor marker to help detect and diagnose cancers of the liver, testes, and ovaries. The AFP is often ordered to monitor people with chronic liver diseases because of an increased risk of developing liver cancer. ...Read more

What is the one test of greatest predictive value for the fetus? Afp?

What is the one test of greatest predictive value for the fetus? Afp?

Prediction?: Predictive value for what? A high AFP is associated with a fetus with a neural tube defect. A large nuchal translucency is associated with chromosomal abnormalities and cardiac defects. A normal level ii ultrasound reduces the risk of structural abnormalities in the fetus. So it depends upon what you are testing for. ...Read more

I'm very nervous to take the AFP prenatal test tomorrow. Why does it have such a high false positive rate?

Gestational Age: It is an indirect test, in other words it does not test the baby directly like an amniocentesis. Other factors unrelated to the health of the baby can affect it but the most common is that your due date was off by a few days and when that is corrected in the calculation made by the lab its usually fine. ...Read more

How accurate is triple AFP test for down syndrome?

Not very.: The triple screen will detect about 70% of mothers carrying babies with down syndrome, but it is only a screening test and does not diagnose down syndrome. There are many false positive tests ("abnormal" tests in women who are carrying babies that do not have down syndrome). A newer blood test for fetal dna in the mother's blood can actually diagnose Down syndrome in women who are at higher risk. ...Read more

AFP is found in blood of a patient with non-seminomatous tumors but never in a patient with a seminoma (which is a testicular tumor). It is present in about 75% of patients with teratocarcinoma, embryonal cell cancer and yolk cell cancer. There is no space for more details but PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE SEEING A UROLOGIST. See hepatologist: AFP or Alpha feto-protein is generally a protein made by cells of liver origin (with some exceptions). In you case, you have evidence of chronic active hepatitis b and this can cause elevation of afp, but more concerning would be the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (hcc), or liver cancer. You will need imaging, usually with ultrasound or ct/mri scan to rule out hcc. See a hematologist. ...Read more

Liver and germ cell: AFP can be elevated in cancers of the liver and some germ cell tumors. However, it also be elevated in patients with non-cancerous liver disease. The AFP results need to be interpreted in the clinical context. It is not a general marker for cancer.
