The extra fluid can lead to a rapid increase in weight over a short period of time (days to weeks). Swelling can occur all over the body (generalized) or only in one part ...Read more

Discomfort behind knee & inner calf/lower thigh. No swelling/color change. Doc examined & didn’t think it was DVT, but no US done. DVT? Worried

Leg pain: From the history, I agree that a deep vein thrombosis is unlikely, as there is no associated swelling, and from your description the discomfort is localized. This raises the issue of a knee related issue, perhaps a popliteal (Baker's) cyst. If you are concerned, then a venous duplex ultrasound would be a great test to determine if you have any venous thrombosis, and possibly the cyst. ...Read more

See below: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor, may be a different one than you saw, and discuss if you may be depressed. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity at tolerated. ...Read more

Get Ultrasound: Seek an opinion from a local vascular surgeon who is a vein specialist. I would recommend that you get an ultrasound to rule out a blood clot or phlebitis as well as to evaluate for venous reflux disease in your legs. The condition could be serious (such as a blood clot) or it could just be minor discomfort related to the varicose vein. The other possibility is another condition not related. ...Read more

Calf swelling: Swelling in the calf is not normal and must be evaluated. If there is associated black and blue discoloration, there could have been bleeding into the calf. Phlebitis is another possibility to be considered. Have a physician examine and advise you. ...Read more

Child complains for a second day that a calf on one leg hurts and now also an ankle, limping for 2 days no swelling, redness and not hot. What is it?

SIMPLE TO SERIOUS: Does the child feel sick? Fever? Calf bigger than other side? It could be something as simple as a muscle strain/sprain, to an infection, leg fracture, or something very serious but also very rare in children; a DVT. This should be checked by a pediatrician. ...Read more

I have minor swelling in one calf mainly in the area right slightly below the knee. No apparent swelling in ankles or feet. No pain or redness.

Swelling Causes: Swelling behind the knee could be a strain or ligament injury. It could be phlebitis. It could also be a cyst called a Baker's cyst. The best course would be to see your family doctor, orthopedist or podiatrist for evaluation. A physical exam and possibly X-rays or an MRI can answer your questions. ...Read more

3yr old has been having occasional leg pain in mainly one leg for over a year, calf area and knee no swelling or redness comes and goes walks normal?

Hard to say: There are several possibilities. Having them seen when they are symptomatic would probably be a good idea to establish the diagnosis. The good thing is that most of the serious conditions we would see in that age group would have steadily worsening pain and not pain that comes and goes, so it is fairly unlikely it is anything serious. ...Read more

Dvt: Unfortunately deep vein thrombosis or blood clot in the leg is on the list for what you describe. Please contact your OB. Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without examining you. A blood clot is unlikely, however you should see your doctor for a proper evaluation. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.

ER is not necessary: This sounds like radiculopathy vs. A peripheral neuropathy. Seeing a Neurologist or PMR MD can distinguish using a EMG test. Treatment would include a possible neuropathic pain medication and/or therapy as well as evaluation via MRI for any changes in your spine. While a clot is a remote consideration, this can be evaluated by your primary care MD via Duplex US or the specialists noted. ...Read more

Chronic lymphedema: Your lymphatic system that drains fluids from various body parts was likely inflamed during the cellulitis. The resulting leg swelling can take months to years to forever to completely resolve. Use compression hose, elevate leg as much as possible above level of heart and consider use of a compression machine or massage to reduce the fluid burden. Consult with a vascular surgeon may be helpful. ...Read more

How do you get rid of persistent swelling in one leg with the other leg being ok?

Need ultrasound: Lack of symmetry in leg swelling should first be evaluated by an ultrasound to assess the source of the problem. A clot found in a deep vein (DVT) would require blood thinners for at least 3 months since these clots can sometimes break off and travel to the lung. If no obvious abnormality can be found the problem can be addressed through leg elevation, compression stockings and maybe diuretics. ...Read more
