For months, I have had acute intermittent pain in the joint of my right big toe (where it connects to the foot). I don't have any standard risk factors for gout. I am active and I am not overweight. What should I do?
Osteoarthritis?: It could be gout, but even without treatment it is unlikely for an acute gout attack to last this long, or to be so intermittent. This is more likely osteoarthritis. An exam and maybe a radiograph should be able to settle the diagnosis quickly and easily. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
Left foot swollen, reddish, and warm to touch. Major pain by big toe and heel. Came out of nowhere. Could it be anything other than gout? Thx in advnc
INFECTION?: The WHOLE foot is hot, red, swollen, but two major areas of pain? Are you diabetic? No open sores? Can you take your temperature; do you have a fever? It could be gout, but two spots at the same time is unusual. It could be cellulitis, a bacterial infection. A doctor really has to see it to decide; maybe some blood work. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Anti-inflammatories: Acute gout is best treated with anti-inflammatory medications. Naproxyn, indomethacin, Ibuprofen and many other type drugs work well. Some physicians will use steroid drugs like prednisone. This all depends on your medical history and medicaitons you are on. Colchinine works very wee also but is an older treatment. All have side effects. Not all are comfortable using colchicine. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I'm q 23yr old male and I have had a sharp pain inside my left foot especially when I waok, it's not swollen, never had gout n pressure is normal. Help?
With the limited info given, I can only guess plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the fascia/arch ligaments. This can be quite painful and persists for months without proper treatment. Stress fracture is also a possibility, or metatarsal syndrome (carpal tunnel equivalent in your food/ankle).
If it is bothersome, consult doc, podiastrist for proper eval and treatment...

My foot thumb has swollen by gout...i have take medical with cataflam (diclofenac) 50 mg drug...its ok now. But the swell still there...what should I do?
Takes quality time.: Many patients seem to think that the correct way to treat gout is to manage the symptoms at the time of the acute attack. The inflammation causing pain is only one characteristic of gout. The long term swelling will take a more long term, managed control of the disorder. For this you will need a physician, experienced in managing all the issues involved in effectively controlling gout. ...Read more

Sore & swollen foot after the gout has been gone for 2 weeks now its purple & skin peeling any explaination?
Get reevaluated: Skin peeling is normal as the swelling goes down after the gout resolves. Purple is congestion where blood is being pooled in the toe as it is slowed down in its return to the heart. If the pain was completely resolved and returned or the same see you doctor. If it is improving then its normal. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Whether or not. ..: Hyperuricemia will continue to build up uric acid deposits in your body. It can also cause kidney disease, apart from kidney stones. Allopurinol can be taken at 100mg-300mg doses quite safely by most. You are in a trap by the idea that you treat gout attacks. You do not. My dad has a swollen foot. Doctor told him he's a gout but a blood test shows his uric acid level as normal. Is it possible? What to do?
See below: A uric acid level can be high, low, or normal in gout but it can also be high, low, or normal when one does not have gout. When in doubt, your dad could see a rheumatologist who can perform an arthrocentesis (to drain fluid) from his foot and that can confirm the presence of gout. Hope that helps. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
