When supplementing with OTC lithium orotate/aspartate, should blood tests still be done regularly to monitor lithium levels, same as prescription lithium types?

It depends: It depends on how much you're using. Usual doses of Lithium Carbonate for bipolar disorder are in the range of 900 mg - 2400mg/day acutely, and 400 mg-1200mg/day maintenance. At these levels, serum monitoring is needed to avoid toxicity. Lithium orotate is given in smaller (10-20 mg/day) doses -- and although much less likely to cause toxicity at that level, it still can in some. ...Read more

I would like to try magnesium supplement. What is the difference between magnesium sulfate, oxide, gluconate and aspartate. Are they all the same?

I would like to try magnesium supplement. What is the difference between magnesium sulfate, oxide, gluconate and aspartate. Are they all the same?

No: The sulfate & oxide are magnesium attached to inorganic molecules. They are not harmful, but inadequately absorbed. Oratate, gluconate, & aspartic acid are natural organic amino acids, which effect much greater absorption & magnesium release in the body. These organic forms are more expensive but worth it. A formulation that releases about "500 mg of elemental magnesium" is a good daily dose. ...Read more

I had a spot on adrenal gland, blood work results were high aspartate aminotransferase level, low phosphate level and high platelet mean volume. Help.

Test results: You are analyzing your test results and getting panicky. Relax. Talk to your doctor, who is in the best position to connect the dots. A "spot" on the adrenal may be nothing and the other test results may not be significant either. Test results need to be interpreted in the context of your symptoms and physical exam, and how much outside the normal range. ...Read more

I recently started taking 250mg of magnesium and potassium aspartate and am wondering if this is causing the beige/grey stool that I've had for 2 days?

Not likely: 250 mg of Magnesium-Potassium Aspartate (presumably, 250 mg of each) provides only 50 mg each of magnesium and potassium. Aspartic acid, combined with these minerals, acts as a mineral transporter, to enhance their uptake into cells. I don't know of any reason why this would alter your stool color. ...Read more

How long do side effects continue when forest starting Valprease 200, is this similar to Lithium, will it make a person gain weight.?

Valproic Acid: So, I think Valprease is a form of Valproic Acid, which is an anti seizure drug which can be effective for Bipolar Disorder. The side effects are completely different from lithium. Valproic Acid can adversely affect the liver, where as lithium side effects involve the kidney. Both drugs can definitely cause weight gain, which can be a huge problem. There are other side effects as well. Good luck! ...Read more

Ans: You're taking lithium, Concerta, aripiprazole and Lamotrigine, which interact to cause side effects and make clinical picture hard to understand. Why are you taking two mood stabilizers? Also, Concerta (dose unknown) can trigger mania/hypomania. Hard to interpret lithium level with limited clinical information. Review meds with prescribing doctor to simplify regimen if possible. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Other agents: You need to discuss the options with your own psychiatrist -- but there are multiple other mood-stabilizing medications. Most are also anticonvulsants, like depakote, lamictal, and even tegretol. Lithium is certainly the oldest applicable medication in bipolar disorder -- which you don't list in your information, just "depression." lithium can help reduce depression also. ...Read more
