Doctor insights on:
Listeria Meningitis Contagious
Maybe, maybe not: Aseptic meningitis is a term usually applied to that process triggered during an infection with a variety of viruses. The dominant group usually causes intestinal issues like cramps or diarrhea, with a fraction of the patients developing meningitis. The germ may pass to someone not immune, but may or may not cause meningitis.
Some types: Meningococcal meningitis can be highly contagious, especially in close quarters, e.g. College dorms, military recruits. Vaccinations recommended, before exposure, contacts get prophylactic antibiotic rx. Others may or not be, depending on the type and how the meningitis was contracted.See 1 more doctor answer
Some > than others: Some forms are much more worrisome than others. Meningococcal meningitis is quite contagious and close contacts are routinely given antibiotics to interrupt transmission. Pneumococcal meningitis contacts are not, since the germ is relatively common among normal individuals and it has not been found necessary.
Quite, but...: The viruses that cause the majority of cases of viral meningitis are actually quite contagious, but does not mean you will get meningitis. You may only get a simple cold when you are exposed to the same virus, or run a bit of a fever and feel fatigued. To go on and actually develop meningitis is quite unusual. SO you may get sick, but not as bad hopefully....
Is viral meningitis contagious as I'm starting to have same symptoms as my work colleague who has just been diagnosed.?
Viral meningitis: Yes it is. Be sure to see your healthcare provider ASAP. If you are already experiencing headaches, fevers go to ER or urgent care ASAP. Best of luck. Dr R
No: If a patient has meningitis from a CSF leak the organisms involved are skin organisms found on all of us. Non-infectious.
Yes: Although some types are more contagious than others, the three most common types of bacterial meningitis all have vaccines available to reduce the risk. There are no vaccines for viral meningitis, but fortunately viral meningitis is typically less serious than bacterial.See 9 more doctor answers
How contagious is meningitis? And how is it spread? I am worried my friend might have it and I was around her and massaged her head. Worried
Meningitis: Causes of bacterial meningitis including strep, neisseria, h flu & viruses like enteroviruses, herpes, & hiv. Bacteria & viruses that cause meningitis colonize the nose & throat & are transmitted through respiratory droplets. Viral meningitis can also be transmitted by fecal-oral routes & insect bites. Usually contacts working within ~3 ft of those with meningitis r considered to be at high risk.See 1 more doctor answer
Varies: Most often you are contagious as long as you have fever. So fever free more than 24 hours is a good determination that you are no longer contagious.
I was told that Lyme meningitis isn't contagious through casual contact. Is it contagious through sexual contact or kissing?
No: Lyme disease is not contagious at all. Please be skeptical about the diagnosis. There is a lot of medical literature showing that it is over-diagnosed. Blood tests for it can often be falsely positive, or misinterpreted. Many people claim to be Lyme disease experts. I would trust only a board-certified infectious disease specialist at an academic center to make the rare diagnosis of Lyme in brain.
