Post-stroke: stiffness. Please consider taking some training in qigong. See www.nqa.org to find a teacher. Tai chi may be an alternative but qigong would be better. Get some massage if you can. See abmp.com for referrals. Peace and good health. ...Read more

After brain stroke recovery in hospital suddenly ammonia 99, encephalopathy, unconcious, breathing on own, feeding thrgh tube, 3 days now , not conciou?

Elevated ammonia: will need to be brought down to below 76 (1.5 x upper limit of normal) This can be achieved with lactulose and neomycin or similar treatment. Recovery of consciousness will hopefully occur soon. Might want to check an EEG (will see what are called triphasics with hepatic encephalopathy) Also they can make sure there is no sub-clinical seizure activity. ...Read more

Please tell me the probability of someone having a full recovery from a stroke?

Depends: It is not possible to provide the probability of recovery as it depends on the size and location of a stroke. The physicians treating the person should be able to give an assessment of possible recovery based on the information obtained from brain scans. A stroke can be small and leave no residual deficits or could be large and cause longstanding difficulties with mobility and self-care. ...Read more

Gungho exec, ready to retire, devastating stroke at 64. Some recovery but so very sad. How can I help my husband?

Support: So sorry -- it's not uncommon to see depression after a stroke -- and I am not talking about mental or emotionally related but it is caused by the brain injury from the stroke. The best thing you can do is to support him physically and mentally as he needed -- also physical therapy and occupational therapy as instructed by your doctor. ...Read more

I'm a year post stroke 100% physical recovery but have memory and focus issues. Also get overwhelmed and distracted easily is there anything to help?

Help: These post stroke problems are not at all unusual. For help I would emphasize stress management techniques and avoidance of sleeping pills, tranquilizers and alcohol. Working with a psychologist or psychiatrist is worthwhile. Also with more time these problems will usually improve as well and continued improvement after strokes goes on for months and years as brain function recovery is ongoing. ...Read more

Is it normal for stroke patience to actively suppress their recovery.

Depends on stroke: For the most part, stroke patients do their best to recover and feel better. Unfortunately stroke in some locations in the brain can cause patients to be unaware of their deficits or impair their will and drive to get better. In situations like this, recovery can be challenging. Physical therapists and rehab physicians are good in recognizing those patients and working with them effectively. ...Read more

Is there any evidence of korean red ginseng extract helping the recovery of stroke patients?

Is there any evidence of korean red ginseng extract helping the recovery of stroke patients?

Wrong question: There is no systematic evidence that korean ginseng is good for anything, let alone stroke. Ginseng is one of those bogus "ancient wisdom" things. Its use is based on a superstition called the "doctrine of signatures:" because the root looks like a little headless man, the ancients got this delusion that it would cure things. Arm yourself with modern knowledge, not ancient superstition. ...Read more

What kind of likelihood is there of having a full recovery in case of paralysis due to stroke?
