What can I do to treat the physical symptoms of anxiety/depression?

Cognitive Behavioral: Depends on the severity and persistence of the symptoms as well as the type of symptoms. Either way, whether panic (fear) or anxiety symptoms, identifying thoughts associated with your symptoms is key. Deep breathing exercises can be a "quick and dirty" tool but I would suggest looking up cognitive behavioral therapy as a long term solution. Exercise is best, quick tool when depressed. ...Read more

How long is it reasonable to allow symptoms of anxiety and depression to continue before treating? I've felt anxious and depressed (tired, unmotivated, apathetic, etc.) since my car accident 1mo ago. On Venlafaxine 225mg, been in therapy >2 years.

Distress/impairment: Determine need/effect of treatment. If doing well with venlafaxine and therapy before auto accident you may be experiencing temporary setback. If you were not doing well then medication and/or therapy must change if not effective after 2 years. Work with prescriber and therapist to determine progress and alternative/additional approaches. Review life skills/motivation. Best regards for relief. ...Read more

Started 10mg of lexapro 4 weeks ago for anxiety and depression, I feel better but still have symptoms of anxiety, cld this mean I need a higher dose?

Possibly: It takes 4-6 weeks for full effect of any given dose of Lexapro so you're pretty much at full effect of 10mg. Anxiety often requires higher doses of Lexapro and similar meds than depression does. So you may need to go up to 15mg or higher to target the anxiety. You could also stay with 10mg and really target the anxiety with a therapist. I hope this helps. ...Read more

I've been under a lot of stress lately. I've been having shortness of breath, chest pains, cramping, & depression. Are these all symptoms of anxiety?

Could be anxiety.: All of those symptoms certainly sound like anxiety. It is not unusual for somebody with anxiety to have a whole host of physical symptoms as their body keys in on every sensation. There are other causes of chest pain that perhaps you should talk to your dr. About. Cramping also can have other causes as well. Diagnosing anxiety is almost a diagnosis of default in this setting so see your dr. ...Read more
