Eating high intake of potassium rich diet ( 7 banana/ day) and other fruits, yet my potassium level is 3.3, is issue with kidney. Anything needed done?

Low potassium: Benicar/hct has a diuretic that causes potassium (k) magnesium (m) losses in your urine. Ask your physician (p) to check your serum m level. If low, it needs to be repleted as k can't be elevated until the m is within normal limits. If your m is normal, ask your p to check your blood and serum k. If your urine is high in k with a low blood k level, you may have a kidney issue, see a nephrologist. ...Read more

Dear MDs: Although my daily diet is > 5000 mg of K rich food/fruits, my K is <3.4. By how much would 12.5 mg diuretic (hctz) decrease potassium level?

Dear MDs: Although my daily diet is > 5000 mg of K rich food/fruits, my K is <3.4. By how much would 12.5 mg diuretic (hctz) decrease potassium level?

Can be significant: HCTZ can certainly do this! Also contributing can be subtle things like diuretic effects of alcohol or caffeine, even large amounts of licorice! Some forms of hypertension are associated with low K to begin with ("hyper aldosterone states") and are very sensitive to even low doses of HCTZ. ...Read more

You're doing fine...: You have made excellent progress towards a more healthy lifestyle. Why do you think something may be going wrong? If you had high blood pressire it is now normal. What is your weight goal? Good idea to take a multivitamin, omega 3 oil and vitamin d=3 and b-12. Be sure you continue to follow up with your physician, continue your weight loss/exercise, and please don't get discouraged! ...Read more

Regarding dried fruit, I thought raisins and prunes don't need preservatives. My last package of prunes had potassium sorbate. Why is that needed?

Preservative: Potassium sorbate is a natural preservative that serves basically the same function as sulfites. It is also used as a flavor enhancer in baby food. Like sulfates, it is "generally regarded as safe" by the fda. ...Read more

Fruits and vegetables to avoid if you have a high alk phos?

Fruits and vegetables to avoid if you have a high alk phos?

Don't Rx a number: Look for the reason the alk phos is high. Many folks with certain blood types shoot the alk phos up every time they eat. Pregnancy, mild paget's, a healing fracture, or cholestasis due to a medication are all famous for raising it -- your physician knows when (and whether) to work it up. 99% of what you read about "foods to eat/avoid for this/that" is hokum. Be proactive. ...Read more
