Lifestyle commitment: There are several tactics, all of which work sometimes, none of which work all the time. #1) limit "screen time", which means no more than one or two hours a day with anything with a screen (tv, computer, smart phone, video games.) #2) organized sports. #3) exercise with them. Walk, swim, run, shoot baskets, play catch, go to the park, ride bike. Whatever works in your family. Good luck. ...Read more
Exercises: Yes, but you don't need to focus on any specific exercise. Just get them to be active, play a sport, ride a bike, etc. The other huge component is nutrition. You need to minimize the amount of sugar, carbs, fat, that they eat. Cut out the candy, soda, ice cream, fruit punch, fast food, etc. Keep this stuff out of the house, and it will make everyone healthy. ...Read more

When they enter school, they have more options for activities with other kids. So enroll them in team and individual sports and help them practice. When those tough teen years arrive, peer pressure can lead kids in multiple directions. Reward health! ...Read more
Agree with Dr. Yoder: I would add, though, that many of our kids are not doing enough exercise during the other three seasons either! I tell my patients that they need some exercise daily, and that the only day they are allowed to not exercise at all is the day of their funeral (which, I add, I hope won't come for a hundred years or so). ...Read more

Daily activities: Make your daily activities more difficult - take the stairs, park further away, bike/ walk to work/ store, sit on a swiss ball/ at your desk and stand up every time you answer the phone, or lunge/ hop/ jump from place to place in your house. Make it happen: Don't encourage: make it a part of life. Do you "make" your child go to school? Yes brush his/her teeth? Yes do you keep allow your child to jump off the roof? No. Exercise should be no different. Be a role model - you must exercise also. Then get a plan. Do it together or help them find an interest. Get help from doctor/school/friends. This is your child's health/life on the line. ...Read more
Childhood obesity: A growing problem in our country is childhood obesity. The dietary education is slowly happening in schools, but there needs to be an emphasis on regular exercise as well. Exercise?: Although many individuals do promote the use of facial exercises to achieve a younger fuller face, I do not understand the purpose of these.
